Mandatory for developers to put them in, but not mandatory for people to earn them.
What I LOVE about achievements is that you can find out when someone is BSing about the games they've played...
Explain a bit on how you might feel they're doing more 'harm than good' 4x0n, I'm curious . | | | | | |
When I said that they were mandatory, of course I meant that they're mandatory for a game which is for the 360. 2 types of games which AP's serve no purpose, RPG's (no Oblivion and Morrowwind are not RPG's, even though they have RPG elements in them) and adventure games. In RPG's you play to immerse yourself in some alien world not to complete some arbitrary goals just to impress your e-buddies. Similar with adventure games, they're interactive stories, and I can't fathom how one could even have AP's in adventure games, except the silly complete the game one which is just retarded, at least IMO (don't see the point of an electronic confirmation that I've completed some game).
The "more harm than good" comment was maybe sligthly excagerated but it sure doesn't help fallout 3, since it just isn't quite fallout to have some stupid goals such as "score 'insert arbitrary number here' critical hits," "kill an ork without taking any damage" etc.
I'll admit though, in some games I'll agree that they seem to be fun, but just NOT in ALL games as MS seems to think is so vital.
ADD: When I say RPG I mean pure RPG, no action-RPG nonesense.
