Default Lag to end all lag

I was playing some WoW when the background updater started up and shot my ping threw the roof. I couldn't play until it finished, kind of defeats the purpose if ya ask me.

yes it does. The background updater is flat out bugged. If it ever pops up again and sends your latency through the roof, you can try opening the updater and unchecking the P2P preference...that's supposed to be a possible workaround.
Personally, i just turned the damn thing off when i was in game and attempted (for about 5 days) to get it to DL the pre-patch out of game. It finally did, mercifully.

You are not alone with this, there are scores of complaints on the forums about it, and regardless of what the official take may be, the DLer is a buggy POS.

HAHA Ya I tried it with the P2P turned off but it wouldn't DL, so I had to turn it on

No worries, just turn the downloader off when you're in game (it may or may not start itself everytime you start and log on...just minimize the game and check your sys tray or task manager and turn that little monster off - once you turn it off, it shouldn't start again unless you exit the game and restart it).

This is a pre-patch that it's trying to download. It's trying to get the bulk of the upcoming 1.11 patch downloaded before it goes live. You don't have to download the pre-patch, but if you do it'll mean less to download on patch day (the only timeline that i've seen for 1.11 going live is sometime this month).

You can try what i did: turn the downloader off everytime you're in game, then when you're not playing go to your World of Warcraft folder and double click on it--> look for BackgroundDownloader.exe and double click. That should start the downloader and hopefully allow you to get the rest of the download without having to worry about it nuking your latency ingame.

Once you have all of the patch downloaded, the downloader shouldn't start anymore (in theory, some folks have not been able to get the thing to stop trying to download regardless of whether or not they have successfully downloaded the pre-patch).

Give all of that a try and give a holler if you're still having issues
