Default MS-DOS to update bios

I currently have an Asus P5VDC-X motherboard and i'm interested in updated my bios to a new revision. I downloaded all the necessary programs, but stupid ASUS doesn't include a help.txt file lols. It includes a .txt file but all it says is what the bios updated on the motherboard. I was trying to figure it out and finally got to it.

What i did was open cmd in RUN and just do it there, but when it got to installing the bios, it kept giving me an error saying "ERROR: MUST RUN IN MS-DOS MODE", but i thought if i open the prompt by typing cmd, it is already ms-dos. Please leave feedback, i really want to update the bios. Thanks! =]

You need to create a dos bootable floppy in windows. Put the bios and flashing program on the floppy and flash it through that

Hi mikey_626!

Welcome to pcapex!!!!!!!!!

Here's my two cents on this.......

First off updating the bios is something an everyday joe shouldnt try to do without knowing what to do.

This is a pre-warning. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!

Updating the bios with the incorrect version or accidentally shutdown during the flash will totally hose your bios chip and render your computer useless! No if's and or but's........If that should happen you'll be paying asus to send you a new bios chip or if unavailable your going to need to buy a new motherboard.

The only two reason necessary to update your bios. There are known issues with that board and the bios update will fix that problem OR your buying a new cpu that isnt supported by that board without the bios flash. Otherwise if your system is running without any problems id skip the flash till needed.

As for updating the bios......
There are two ways of doing it....
1. downloading the asus update utility off their website. Which allows you to flash your bios in windows.
2. creating a bootdisk using the instructions posted above. On the asus website there should be a tab on the left in your mainboard section that states how to update the bios. This will show you the procedure in flashing the bios if you so want to do.

I hope this helps............

Asus does have a bios update utility you can run through windows. Give me a few and I see what I can find.

Edit: The utility I was talking about is Asus WinFlash but I don't know if it is compatable with your mobo. It appears you need to use AFUDOS. The instructions can be found here.
