| Apex Master Tech | at first my laptop started behaving weird. The bios screen wouldn't show up normally, but instead it looks like 6 small bios screens lined up horizantal at the top 2 inches of the monitor. then it would say windows encountered a problem, how would you like to boot? except things would be mispelled, like wifdows, and saufe safe wkth nitwrkoing ljst known slktings start normjlly i reformatted a couple times and i kept installing the drivers the first time itd load up then i would restart and it would show windows xp professional then just black screen. anyone have any idea what could be wrong?, |

| Apex Tech Demi-God | How about some technical specs on your laptop? Have you tried a BIOS update? Have you added anything lately?

...huh, "BIOS" in english is "BIOS", if you are talking about his language settings, then whajever lunguagr pr9ducess txet leik thys...in other words, its very unlikely that its his language settings.... this looks exactly like bios corruption from overheating, overclocking, or possibly display adapter VRAM issues causing errors (not necessarily related to BIOS)... i can reproduce that kind of problem perfectly by simply pushing my FSB too far...the only difference is that i have ASCII characters peppered all over my screen (such as the "spades", "hearts", "diamonds", etc)... might be a long shot, but its possible your heatsink might be malfunctioning, either on your cpu or your gpu... if all else fails, you might just need to reflash your bios, and once you do, run a DOS based memory test program to verify the integrity of your SODIMMs, if anyone else can think of anything more relevant, im all ears...these problems are a royal pain in the ass to troubleshoot...

Yeah, I agree. You'd do good to take it apart and get an air-duster to clean all the dirt and dust out of it. Also, smell the heatsinks. Do they stink of burning dust? Whenever mine get like that it's time for a refit and clean out.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I just had this same problem on a clients computer I was fixing. Turned out the video card sporadically died. I replaced the card and it worked fine. The system was running stock (It was a client, not one of my geek friends ) and for whatever reason the display adapter just felt like ****ting the bed.

| Apex Master Tech | wait, the videocard was responsible for the text or the windows boot issue? or are they both issues caused by it? is there anyway to diagnose the videocard w/o replacing it? |

All I did is took a junky pci video card, threw it in and the weird characters/spelling on boot and in bios went away. And then windows actually decided to boot.

| Apex Master Tech | i uninstalled the video driver and atleast now windows boots consistently, but wont run resolution higher than 640*480 with 8 bit color. i researched the hp zv5000 and its got an integrated video card, so replacing isnt an option unless its a whole motherboard. could this be poor heating caused by a heatsink that got moved or something? or most likely is the card permanently damaged? thanks |
