Default Locked out of RegEdit in 2000

Working on a computer and thought i could fix the problem by using regedit (had the instructions and what i was looking for). Run regedit window pops up and goes away. Try again, same problem. Head into task manager and window pops up and goes away. Starting to think it is a virus since now the only sites i can not access are any site dealing with antivirus (norton inparticular). Anyone know a way to bypass or solve this problem so i can get into regedit? Thanks.

Have you tried in safemode? Windows stops nearly everything running when it enters safe mode so there is a good chance you will be able to access the systems you have been locked out of.

Have not tried that yet since the owner of it keeps trying to get back on it whenever my hands are not on the mouse. Thanks, will go give it a try.

::EDIT:: Just walked next door to take a look at. Has his laptop and the windows 2000 system on. I ask if i can take a look at the 2000 machine for a minute and get 'I am kind of using both of them'. Obviously not since the 2000 machine is still waiting for him to login since the last time i looked at it and rebooted....

heh, I remember having one of those kinds of viruses, really annoying as anything used to find/kill it are instantly crashed/closed by it, if safe mode fails, it's time for the most common solution in a windows troubleshooter's toolkit...the total reformat and reinstall

Sounds like a virus or some bad spyware. I have a program
called ERD Commander 2000 that boots the system from a
CD and then lets you do anything to your files. I think it's some
form of linux. It was worth every penny I payed for it. They
have a new version but it comes with a whole Suite of Tools.
You don't even want to know the price. I think I payed $200
and now you'll have to multiply by 6 or 7 :-(

Sounds like a neat package Slaymate.

Could not get to the guys PC to work on it even though by the time i left he never logged back into it. I did however get a chance to look at it this morning and asked what all he has downloaded and installed. Of course, you get the usuall user answer of "NOTHING!..... why?". Could not help but notice the extra toolbars in IE and the give or take 20 mystery icons loaded into the start tray....

I dont work in IT but they seem to enjoy the fact that their business analyst is a former IT employee. Untill i get more time to look at it (without interuptions so he can check his mail) i will just tell him i need time to "research" (read: bitch about it on PCA) the problem.

I wouldn't waist your rime on it mate, if they aren't going to let you have 5 minutes alone with the machine to work on the problem then just tell them it can't be done and your re-installing windows. That'll make 'em beg you to fix the problem.
