Default Network Question (Remote Desktop)

Well I have my File/Music Server up and running for my house and thought it would be a neat idea to be able to play our (my mothers and I) music over the 5.1 system in the living room. I went on to Radio Shack (yes and payed to damn much) for a 1/4" to RCA cable. Using that I connected the file server to the amp. I thought remoteing into the desktop from my computer would alow me to play the music and it would play through the servers onboard sound to the amp, well it does not work that way.

When you remote into the computer the music is played through the speakers on the computer you are using to access the server.

My question is there any way to play music from the server remotley so that it plays through the server sound card and to our amp. A remote music player software program would be the best thing so that it would be easy for my mom to use it.

I know it would be easy just to hook the server up to the TV and do it that way however our tv does not have any imputs other than Coax for the cable .......and you cant run s-video through the RF converter we have.

Thanks

Remote desktop won't let you do that. You will have to access the music files via a shared folder and try it that way. Remote desktop is to simulate setting at the computer.

Yah I know, but I cant to it through a shared folder eather because that would play the files on the computer I am looking at them with.

I need a way to play the files on the server so that they play through the servers sound card to our amp.

Thanks all the same

If I was a programer I guess I could make a program to do it hehe

That's a tough one, I have never heard of anyone doing this before, so keep us posted with your findings...

You want a piece of software like Real VNC It allows you to control the desktop of one machine from another. So everything you do happens on the server not the local system. I use it at home from my laptop to the server I have jacked into the TV when I want to pick a show to watch since the text is just a tad to small to read from the couch.

It can be set up with or without passwords and is a quick install.

What you need to do is to go to www.logmein.com create an account and install the software. Then go to your music server and install the software on there too. Now you will be able to control your server from your computer and play music off it using the servers onboard sound. ...works for me

I got it but cant get it to work, it does not seem to find my server. Do you just use the server name or its pi addres. Do you have to install it on the server as well. Thanks again for the help!

*EDIT*

I installed the server program on my server and the viewer on my computer but it still did not work, cant seem to get it to find the server

Server name or IP address should work. If you are using any firewall software, or some of the active spyware scanners (windows defender....) you will need to let them know that the VNC software is ok to run accross the network.
