Question Laptop help, No cdrom only floppy.

Laptop help, No cdrom only floppy.

I have a

DELL
LATITUDE XPI P133SI
NO RAM EXCEPT 8 MB ON BOARD. 8MB of system memory onboard.
Intel Pentium 133Mhz
3.5"FDD
11.5" TFT Display
2 Serial Ports, 1 Parallel Port, 1 PS/2 Port, 2 PCMCIA Ports, Soumd in-out & Mic, Trackball Pointing Device.

The Latitude XPi CD M166ST and M133ST are the only systems in the Latitude XP family of products that will support 32MB FPM (Fast Page Mode) SODIMMs (Small Outline Dual-Inline Memory Module). No other systems in the XP family of products were designed to utilize 32MB SODIMMs. The systems that do not support 32MB SODIMMs are the Latitude XP 4xxC/CX, XP 4xxD/T, XPi PxxD/T/ST, XPi P100SD/133ST and XPi CD P150ST.

Since 32MB SODIMMs are not supported on the the systems listed above, users should understand that they have not been validated on these systems and as such the functional reliability of the SODIMMs can not be guaranteed. Dell can not be held responsible for any loss of data or other memory malfunctions if the user has 32MB SODIMMs installed on a Latitude system that was not designed to support them.

Specifications: Dell™ Latitude™ XPi P100SD and P133ST

Memory: Dell™ Latitude™ XPi P100SD and P133ST

Basically need help on installing a OS that supports 8mb of ram and also installs from a floppy.

Or need some cheap ram for this thing so I can add WIN98 or 2000 or even linux.

Any linux that can install from a floppy and easy to install and use???

even with the max 40mb,linux will be tricky.
1)pop the hdd into another machine and install DSL http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ then rerun the config after reinstalling the drive.this is the method i used for 365x thinkpad w/40mb.
2)debian would need 4-6 floppies and a working network connection to complete a full gui install.
3)slackware....roughly the same unless the floppy supports 2.8meg,then a complete floppy install can be done.......32 or so floppies.

a lightweight window manager and desktop environment are key.once installed and configured, you'll find actually using linux easy.

You should be able to coax windows 98 onto that thing if you max out the ram to its 40mb limit, you can still get copies of it on floppy disk off of Ebay.

Anyway where did you get that beast of a machine, its even older than my other laptop which has 64mb of ram and somehow manages to run Windows XP Proffessional.

To be honest, CubanConnectionZ, i've been around for quite some time (afterall, I'm 36..)....
And, imho, Windows 98SE just starts to "get going" from 128mb and on... 8mb... that is
Windows 3.11 terrritory... , imho...

Isn't there any way to buy some additional memory for this 'relic?

If you can bump the memory upto 64mb you will be fine running Win 98se just don't go expecting to win any races, as I said before I've got an old lappy with 64mb of ram running XP but the processor is either 233 or 266 so that helps it along a bit more than your 1333Mhz is going to.

ME either It might be pc-66 laptop ram.

WOw it that older memory:

Memory
Architecture EDO memory*
Wait states 1
Memory module sockets 2
Memory module capacities 4-, 8-, and 16-MB
Standard RAM 8 MB (EDO) on system board
Maximum RAM 40 MB
Memory access time 70-ns tRAC
20-ns tCAC
BIOS address F000:0000 (system)

Is this true???

Hard-Disk Drive
Removing the Hard-Disk Drive

The computer also comes with a removable hard-disk drive, located on the left side of the computer. The computer automatically senses the hard-disk drive type.

NOTE: The computer's BIOS does not support hard-disk drives received from vendors other than Dell.

CAUTION: To prevent data loss, turn off the computer before removing or installing the hard-disk drive. Do not remove the hard-disk drive if the computer is in suspend mode or if the hard-disk drive access indicator is on. Removing the drive under these conditions leads to loss of data.
