Default Hmm, don't know what its called

I know what the name is but its something that is in windows that you can type at the command prompt and it runs a program that checks all the files in windows to see if they are all in working order. Does anyone know what or how to get to this program.

I know its there cause a tech support guy had me do it one time.

Command Parameters are listed when you type sfc into Command

Make sure you have your O/S CD In the CD drive before running system file checker!

I've definatly got a problem now. I restarted my computer, don't know why exaclty, but though it would be better before i ran sfc.

Well i get an error right before windows loads saying that this file
windows\system32\config\system

is corrupt or not there. Do i tried to use the recovery console, but i don't know how to fix that file using the recovery console.

I get to where it says which os do you want to logon to and i chose c:windows and don't know where to go from there.

Boot from your O/S CD and go to where you would normally do a fresh install and "Press R to run system repair" it will automatically find out what is missing or damaged and will fix accordingly.

no it doesn't, or you need to be more specifc. I get to that screen and press r and it brings me to a dos prompt and asks what os i want to login to. I have 1: c:\windos, and the only thing i know to type in the gets me anywhere is c:\windows, and then i am at a dos prompt.

Dang, I had that exact same problem happen to me. The exact same. And I had made a backup registry (weird coincidence), and I wasn't even able to restore it. So, you basically have to reinstall. Sorry

You may also want to try "chkdsk /r" in the dos prompt.....

"The fourth pass of CHKDSK is only invoked if the /R switch is used. /R is used to locate bad sectors in the volume's free space. When /R is used, CHKDSK attempts to read every sector on the volume to confirm that the sector is usable. Sectors associated with metadata are read during the natural course of running CHKDSK even when /R is not used. Sectors associated with user data are read during earlier phases of CHKDSK provided /R is specified. When an unreadable sector is located, NTFS will add the cluster containing that sector to its list of bad clusters and, if the cluster was in use, allocate a new cluster to do the job of the old. If a fault tolerant disk driver is being used, data is recovered and written to the newly allocated cluster. Otherwise, the new cluster is filled with a pattern of 0xFF bytes. When NTFS encounters unreadable sectors during the course of normal operation, it will also remap them in the same way. Thus, the /R switch is usually not essential, but it can be used as a convenient mechanism for scanning the entire volume if a disk is suspected of having bad sectors."

Check the date on the threads you're answering. This one is almost 6 months old. I'm sure he has solved his problem by now. Oh, and welcome to PR.

Just for anyone else that comes across this problem (I know it is an old thread) here is another possible cause:
Is this a released version of XP or a bootlegged one.
I got a copy not long after XP came out to play with and see if I wanted to get it. Since this copy could not be authenticated, I got the same error after 30 days.
Fortunately (assuming you install your program files onto another partition or drive) all that had to be re-installed was the OS and any app/game patches that wrote to the registry since Windows now reinstalls over itself rather nicely.
