Default HTPC - Meedio or WMCE?

Hey ho people!

So project Offspring went pretty well and its been up and running for a month or two now and ive got a question...

Would i be better off (in terms of system requirements) running Windows MCE instead of XP with a media portal ontop?

Currently using Meedio which is great... but it an absolute resource killer! and i swear there is a memory leak as well as the longer its on the slower it gets.

The system isn't the quickest but shouldnt really have 1-2 second lag gaps between songs which is the main problem im having at the moment

Celeron 1.7
512 mb PC2100
GeForce MX 440
SB Live! 5.1
MSI mobo... generic model for Advent PC
DVD rom
Multi card reader

I think something terrible has gone wrong with the install in any case as the system is struggling to play Worms World Party smoothly - which is ridiculous! im well above the stated requirements for playing it.

So im going to be doing a fresh install and was just wondering what people would recommend doing... fresh XP install along with every available tweak for running faster and then Meedio on top or give MCE a try?

Thanks for any comments!

Stick with XP and just make sure you thin it down by removing all of the extra microsoft processes you don't need.

Hmm... a memory leak, eh? Even though your system is still pretty fresh, maybe a program or something isn't working properly and syphoning off your free ram. I recently had to reinstall a fresh copy of XP cuz my OCing ventures corrupted my windows files. About a week ago, my help and support center was acting funny, and I attempted to run it, it wouldn't show anything but would suck every last resource out of the PC. Luckily, I found a site instructing on how to reinstall the Help and Support center.

I'd suggest using XP... and at least see if a reinstall will solve your problem. What have you got to loose?

Windows Media Center is a huge resource hog also. Additionaly, make certain there are MCE drivers available for your tuner & video & everything else. I got burned by not doing my homework, and ended up with a tuner card that has no MCE drivers (yet).

MCE is XP Professional without the more advanced networking capabilities. It can't join a Windows Domain.

Stick with Meedio, especially if you paid for it.

You can try to prune down XP by using XPLite. This will get rid of some of the OS overhead.

Mark.... whilst MCE might have a nice interface for MultiMedia purposes it also comes
with sh*tload of stuff one really doesn't need... typically MS, imho... go for PurpleDiamonds
suggestion and/or take a DEEP look into the Windows XP services....

Might be a bit "daunting" at first... but it pays off!
And... it's fun!!! (imho)

I've got my old Celeron400A Gateway (with 512mb PC 100) perform quite decently that way...

TDR

ps... we share the same name....
