Default Windows XP Pro install problem.

OK I'm frustrated... I decided today that it was time for a fresh install. Its been about 1.5 almost 2 years since i wiped everything out and had a fresh install of windows. No here is the problem. I boot off of my windows xp pro disc and hit F6 to install the 3rd party scsi drivers. (So the windows install program will recognize my SATA HD.) I do this and I install the drivers (newest ones) off a floppy. The install program will finish loading the nessacary files and then asks what I want to do. I choose to install windows and it then tells me it can't find a HD do install to. So I tried the old original drivers I used the last time I did the install. Same problem. I'm not doing anything different from the last time I installed windows on my machine and it worked fine then. I know the HD is conected properly ( no loose connections or anythign) because I'm writting this, so the HD works properly). What could be the problem???

I was going to do that, its a maxtor so I went to their site and downloaded the program which was an iso of a bootable cd. But I couldn't get the disc to burn because I think it needs a regular cd and I only have a DVD burner installed.

reza, that was very disconcerting and odd...

bouve124, did you slick the drives yet?? what are your system stats? how many HDD's do you have? do you need a CD-R? if you did not slick the drives here is what i am thinking and is my standard operating procedure for my PC's. I usually make a partition using partition magic on the existion drives say about 8 gb. and then i build a new load in that partition then i clone the new partition and slick the drive and then reload the clone. but then you have a back up and you dont lose your drivers and stuff.. i load the OS and the Drivers and software that i use regularly get everything tweaked and then clone it that way i have a 15 min restore instead of 4 or 12 hours loading all of that software!

let me know via PM if you need software or a CD-r or what ever!

Have you tried creating a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD? you can create an install CD that includes win XP SP2 and supports SATA natively.

I have installed my system with that and it works great. it will also save you a lot of time patching up all the security holes , I mean features

I don't use windows much, besides at work. But it sounds like a bad floppy disk or floppy drive. IMO just create a slipstreamed copy...

Thanks so much guys, When I get home later tonight I'm going to try the slipstream thing. Sounds like that is the best and easiest way to do things. I'll let everyone know if it works out for me.

dvd burners can burn cdr's too...

when you hit f6 does it find the drivers on the floppy drive?

does your mb have both sata raid and normal sata ports? if so are you using the driver for the normal sata ports or the raid ones?

what is the model of motherboard?

Yeah I know the dvd drive can burn cdr's also, I just wasn't thinking straight at the time. (Mad at the PC) I have a ASUS K8V Mobo. I'm using the correct driver for the normal sata. But I'm going to make a slipstream XP disc now and give that a shot. But thanks for the the help guys. I'll let ya know if it does the job.

well guys... The slipstream disc didn't do the trick. So I tried using the provided drivers along with the slipstream disc and still gives me this crap about not being able to find a HD. Now could the whole problem be because I'm not formating the HD before hand. Only reason I didn't do this is because my other rig is buried in my spare room while some home improvements are being done and I won't have access to another pc.

You've got nothing to loose by trying, a quick format will only take 10 minutes.

Yeah... Maybe I'll wait till this weekend. By then I should be able to dig my extra rig outta the mess that is my house right now and have that incase I wipe things clean and can't get it working again. Besides tonight I have to work on the girlfriends computer. I built it about a year ago and the thing is soooooooooo loud! (stock cpu cooler and power supply). Last week I put some quiet papst case fans in it and now tonight I'm putting a zalmen quiet cpu cooler ( http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/...U_LED_AMD.html ) I think I got the one with the blue fan, not sure though. Then I'm gonna put another papst quiet fan in PSU. That should make it almost silent. She said she doesn't mind the noise but it would drive me crazy so it has to be done. LOL That and I need someting to mess around with.

Turn USB emulation on in the bios or use a ps2 keyboard. At the stage where it's asking you to install 3rd party scsi drivers it hasn't loaded the USB driver and can't see your keystrokes.

Nope... shouldn't be its the only HD in the PC. Its just such a weird thing because when I first built the sytem everything went real smooth. Well I'm gonna let it be untill this weekend then I'm gonna wipe it clean regardless. Then I'll just have to get it working somehow....

So I take it my post wasn't relevant in this situation.

How about scrolling down on the driver selection, if you keep going down it'll show more drivers even tho it doesn't look like it will.

Seriously don't overlook the obvious.

Well it took me a little while to find the time to give this another go.... I tried every drive I could find to get the windows install to recognize my drive. I ended up just saying the heck with it and used the maxblaster util. to wipe the MBR and Drive clean. So I was sitting there with a clean drive that was ready to have a fresh install of windows. I popped in my slipstreamed disc of XP and began the process, and BAM it didn't work! So ok I'll give it a shot with F6 then install SATA drivers off a floppy. And once agian it sez that I can't detect any HD. And I know everything is ok with the drive cause the bios can see it. So I just gave up on it and grabed a spare regular IDE drive and istalled windows on that and got all my drivers installed. Then I just cloned the drive onto my SATA drive and thats how it stands. I just can't understand why I couldn't get crappy windows install to see the drive. I know I tried the correct drivers. But whatever, this is going to be the last time I do this on this system. Before it will ever need a fresh install I plan on building a new rig.

But thank you all for the idea's and help.
