Unhappy More RPC issues

Ok, Folks I’ve got one for ya. I have WinXP with SP2. I keep having a problem with the “Remote Procedure Call” error. I have checked the windows folders for any trace of “msblast” and get nothing. I have run Mcafee, Stinger, and the Symantec tool for blaster and get no results. If I do what one of the other forums suggest and simply change the setting on this service to “restart the service” instead of “restart the computer” I start getting “Generic Host Process” errors after so many service restarts (I’m guessing). I have even done searches in the registry for “msblast”, “rpcpatch”, and “rpcTftpd” with no luck. Although a couple of months ago I did find “msblast” in the registry but no where else, and once I removed it with system restore off, it stayed gone. But the system still shuts down if I set the service to restart the computer. I know that changing that setting is only putting a band aid on the problem, and Frankly I’d really like to fix it properly. I have also made sure that my Mcafee firewall is set to block port 135.

ok, since no one seems to be helping and just saying hi. ill take a stab at this.

Boot into safe mode. go into your registry. look for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardwa re Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROO T\LEGACY_RPCSS

if you wanna be sure then export that out to anywhere. make sure you dont delete any of the sub keys of it.

And then reboot and see what you get then.

Aside from having service pack 2 do you have all of the other patches and updates installed? SP2 is far from a fix-all update. One thing I would attempt is going to autopatcher.com and grabbing the latest version and slapping it on a cd. I don't bring a windows box online until I run autopatcher, thrown on AVG and Sygate.

Thanks for the quick response, I tried your suggestion and got as far as "ROOT" I don't have the "LEGACY_RPCSS" anywhere that I could see.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, I have all the latest updates that I'm aware of, I have my updates set to "AUTO", and I always stay on top of my Mcafee virus protection updates (in case you were wondering). But I really appreciate the tip about autopatcher.com, this was good info. Unfortunately the only site I could find a working download link for it was a slothy transfer rate of about 3-5k per sec. but I will keep it handy once it gets finished.

Thanks for the response:
This is the setting I am currently using for the last several days and it seems to have stopped all errors, problem is just as you eluded to, "won't solve the RPC issue" I am really hoping to fix this thing properly and not just put a band aid on it. Once again, all input is appreciated.

Ok, I will have to change the setting back to "restart the service" so I can at least get the Generic Host Process server" error, This "take no action" setting has been working so well I'm almost tempted to leave it alone......no,...no that wouldn't be right, I have to keep telling myself it needs to be fixed correctly.
