Question having issues setting up an ftp site - help?

Okay first and foremost I must state that xp pro was not my first choice but after linux refused to work (fedora and mandrake) I resorted back to xp and IIS. Now I let IIS setup the site but changed the root directory to the d drive as there is more room there. I added a rule in the firewall so it would open port 21 (all I have on is windows firewall at the moment) and from the server it connects fine. however as soon as I try from another machine it tells me the server has closed the connection before it even goes in. I have checked off anoymous users for now just to get this thing working, I have shared the directories in the root folder as well as the folder itself. I tried a thirdparty setup (serv-U) and that didn't get me any farther along either. I know there is something fundemental that I am doing wrong but what is it???? I have run thru five or six different tutorials and started over from scratch twice and nothing changes.....why must this be so hard..

Are you behind a router. You may need to open the ports if you want outside people to be able to connect. If you are behind a router and your trying to connect to it on your lan find out the local ip of the computer on the lan.

Say your IP is 55.555.555.555
Your Router IP is 192.168.1.1
Your SErver IP is 192.168.1.5

If your trying to log on by going to ftp://55.555.555.555 it wont work. Try going to ftp://192.168.1.5 as that is the server ip.

ya as capt planet stated, open up the ports on your router.

20 and 21. And I think you have to open passive ports too.20000 to 20200 should work

Just a few ideas which you may have tried, but trying to help you troublshoot...
  • Could your firewall be interferring?
  • When you go into the router setup, under the port range, do you have enable checked?
  • Also in router setup, do you have certain access blocked?

The ftp server itself is no longer behind a firewall..its just hanging out there but seeing as I can't connect I am not to worried about others connecting

My other machines (the ones I am trying to connect to it with) have been used on many other FTP sites with no issues. I opened the ports anyways on the router just in case and yes they are enabled.

I am assuming since I can use my ftp prog with other sites access should not be an issue

I will attempt the DNS thingy and let you know how it goes. This is starting to become more aggrevating then its worth
