Question Home Theater PC Problems

Okay first and foremost here are the specs of the machine
Windows XP Pro - SP2
2.4 celeron
abit IC-7
1 gig pc3200 Kingston Value Ram
GeForce FX5200 with S-Video Out
MSI Tv Tuner Card
160gb Seagate SATA Drive
Pioneer 16x DL DVD+/-R-RW Burner

The build of this machine will serve two purposes - replace VCR (record old VHS to DVD and use as PVR) and create an MP3 jukebox...

Now here are my questions...
  • Anyone try XP Media Center Edition 2005? How does the PVR function work for you
  • Anyone try mediaportal? (http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net) I used to be able to get it to record now it doesn't. When it did it seemed to record only the middle portion of the screen at like a 320x240 resolution....it looked like motion capture by Atari 2600.
  • I have also tried Beyond TV and ShowShifter with similar results
I bought the MSI cuz my intent was to go from satellite to PC to reciever with the s-video and the Hauppage cards in that price range didn't have S-Video in. The IC7 has optical in which again was going to go from Satellite to Pc to Receiver. Now because the playback was so bad I am stuck with composite video and audio in with s-video out and composite audio out. (The optical out I may try to use with my Line6 Guitarport) I am tempted to trade the sucker in but not until I make sure its not a setting and a that a new tuner card would solve my problem.

Any help or guidance would most surely be appreciated and worth some rep bling (which isn't worth much but its all I got)

Thanks

Havent tried media center yet. It didnt even work correctly for Billy Gates on National TV. I have an AIW 9800 Pro and I know when i select a lower grade record the Resolution goes down. I am downloading the program from the link you gave I will let you know what I find.

Thanks for the help. I have not found a resolution for recording on any of the programs I have tried. I did play with a few settings (Media Portal) on the Video Capture, Video Pin and Video preview options and set the resoltion to 720x480 which seems to work out best for viewing TV. Its just the record that is giving me the headache. I also am using the option for Software encoding card as the MCE option and H/W options don't provide me the options I need as well as the TV viewing is horrible.

You can find these options by hitting F2 and clicking on the + sign in Television or do the Television wizard and edit the capture card settings...it will take you to the same screen

MSIPVR which I have yet to find one setting for (its made by Intervideo) and again shows the atari version after recording..
You have to play with the channels to get the TV working. I am using the composite in so I setup a channel with an "external" configuration and then hat to set the channel in the interface under myTV. It recognizes cable in right away but the picture quality is quite poor

Uninstall the software and drivers for the card. Then try reinstalling with the latest drivers maybe its something to do with the drivers. I know ihad a hell of a time with my AIW card.

Yeah I did that..the newest drivers from MSI are from 2001 or something like that....which kinda ticked me off seeing that newer ones should have come out in conjunction with MCE-XP. Oh well thanks for the help...
