Default XP Users// Graphics Card Update

This morning I noticed the Windows Update icon appeared at the bottom of my screen, ok so I go to see what its installing like usual.

"I see 9800Pro UPDATE" This cant be that bad right? Mabey it makes windows work better with my graphics card.

THIS IS NOT THE CASE! After I installed it, and I restarted my PC a wierd version of ATIi's drivers were there, and ontop of that they didnt un-install my omega drivers. Messing things up, no drivers even initialized at startup! So I whip out the old driver cleaner, get things fixed up and install the new WindowsXP 5.1 Cats off of the ATi website, my computer (Windows Update) is STILL asking me to install this "9800Pro Update"

Arghhh!

Just a warning to others, especially with the Omega Drivers.

Mabey the people using the Cats could give us the inside scoop?

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't recieved that with the Catalyst Drivers. I'll be sure to look out for it with my comp that uses Omega though.

To be honest I tend to ignore anything Windows update gives me on my graphics card (5950 256 ultra) and hide the update. For some good reviews on drivers with comparison tables and downloads I use www.guru3d.com and have done for several years, hope this helps you with your quest

I ignore ALL suggested updates for hardware. I would rather control that myself. The only thing I use the update site for is patches and OS updates.

Windows Update is an absolutely horrible thing to trust for driver updates! 9 times out of 10 it will suggest an old driver as a new one and the other time it will suggest a really old driver. It's basically a lose/lose proposition.

The smartass in me that refrained from posting earlier just won out:

Go turn off auto-updates, ta-da problem solved.

If you need to update, do it when you know whats going on... not when mein Fuhrer B. Gates feels like it.

Anyone have a clue how to get this little (!) to go away at the bottom right part of my screen?

Edit: errrr without turning off auto update..

Edit Edit: Scratch that, figured it out...I think..

it is possible to keep windows updated with out installing SP2........in full.go to win update, select view other updates, and manually select updates.overall it's better to run SP2 than pick'n'choose.
to see if you might have problems upgrading to SP2 start here.
if any programs that you use are listed, check for the latest updates from the maintainer.(i.e. style xp 2.15 and up is SP2 compatable).
.............for my money,i've spent the last year migrating to linux

Ditto. I don't trust MS that much and most of the time the stuff we need is specialized enough I don't figure MS'll get it right.
