Default Windows XP boot screen

My friend wanted me to change his boot screen, to make a long story short he told me that he had installed SP1, so i put in the new ntoskrnl.exe file for the picture he wanted that was for sp1, well it won't get past the boot screen cause i bet he doesn't have sp1, i know i should have checked but i just took his word for it. Now i was wondering how to fix it, is there anyway possible to fix it without formatting, and if the only way is to use the recovery console off of the xp cd then you will have to tell me what to do cause i have no clue.

Maybe more work then you need to do...but pull the HD and put it in another XP Machine, replace the file, put the HD back into the original computer and boot.

There might be an easier way, but that was the first to come to my mind.

Also, it's always good to do a backup before you make any changes.

Easier said than done scapegoat, for some reason no matter what type of boot disk i use i can't get access to the C drive.

Now i am in the recovery console trying to find the backup i made (C:\Documents and Settings\Jon\Desktop) and copy it to C:\WINDOWS\system32. Now the problem is its been so long since used dos i can't remember all the commands. So what i need to do is copy a file ntoskrnl.exe from C:\Documents and Settings\Jon\Desktop\ntoskrnl.exe to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. If anyone knows a command that will work in dos to copy that please let me know.

O, for some reason when i am in the recovery console and type dir to get a directory of c: i see documents and settings listed as one of the directorys but i can't type to get into that folder.

A little more than obvious, if ya ask me. Why in the name of (insert name of god/diety/idol here) would you reformat for something like that?

EDIT: Oooops... nevermind, I see you've tried that. What ver. of DOS are you trying to use? If the drive is formatted using NTFS I doubt any older versions will work. Does XP offer the option of creating a boot disk? Perhaps you could make a compatible one on your rig?

Good Luck

You might try checking here for a boot disk image and any additional needed drivers for that particular system to recognize the HD. I hope this helps!

I would go with the taking the HDD out and putting it in another XP Machine.. ThatÂ’s what I would do in this situation.. But I might add... You might want to look into the creation of Boot screens for XP.. Simply put.. you can only use 16 color images and there color pallet has to match the color pallet in the ntoskrnl.exe which is probably what happened because without this it will also hang and not boot on into windows.. not even in safe mode.. I have been working on some PR boot screens and Logon Screens.. Just waiting for GK or someone to post some good High res versions of the PR and PimpRig Logos... I have a free program for putting a different boot image on XP I will upload later and link if you all want me to.. let me know.. It will automatically set the image into the ntoskrnl.exe and change the color pallet contained within the file to the appropriate values and you can use any image that is 16 colors

Guys...a DOS Boot disk will not allow you to see a NTFS Formatted Hard Drive which is recommended when you install Win XP. NTFS allows better security then FAT and DOS.

If the HD is FAT, then yes, you could use a Dos Book disk and replace the file in DOS.

My original post was based on a NTFS Drive.

I would copy the file off of the XP cd if I could find it, but i made a backup on the hard drive (it was just in a really ****ty location). So there is a backup on the hard drive and i get access to the hard drive through the recovery console.

If i pulled that hard drive out and put it into my computer wouldn't i lose everything on it?? I've never done that before so i don't know.

The boot disc that XP creates is a boot disk for millenium ed. And even with that i can't get access to the hard drive or the cd drive.

So i take it no one else remembers dos commands???

EDIT:: This file had to by copied in safe mod first, i take it that if i can eventually copy it in dos, that won't matter?

Nah dood you won't lose everything. I don't think the guys would have told you if you were going to lose everything. Just pull it out and plug it in.. easy enough =P

Ok, but before i do that, do they connect with the standard 80 pin IDE cables that my desktop uses?? I would assume by the way everyone is talking that they do, but i don't want any surprises when i take out the hard drive.

Yes it does. You don't have to worry. The IDE cables are all the same There will be no surprises. If you plug the hard drive in the computer will notice it as a Secondary master hard drive. If it doesn't just reply here or PM me and i'll help you fix it.

Bootdisk.com has a few links for NTFS compatible bootdisks on their main page... I guess I missed the d/l link on the site you posted.

No, I don't, not really, not in America, not in a boat and DEFINITELY not with a goat!

You might want to look on the drive and Slave it before you do this because if you put it after a master on the same IDE channel you will not boot.. And possibly freak out on use for not telling you at the get go...Chk the drive and see if it tells you what pins to jump (usually right beside the 40Pin IDE recepticle) and if the drive does not provide instruction (usually either printed on the circuit board or on the HDD lable) then get back with us and tell us the make a model of the HDD and we will help you out..

I wasn't worried about that cause it would have to be a slave cause i already have to hard drives on one IDE channel.
