![]() | sounds like something went south, your best bet might be to do a repair console, either that or a new install, but hopefully the repair console works for yah! |

| Apex Tech Maniac | Beat me to it, putwig. If that doesn't work (and I've had machiens bluescreen after reinstalling the boot loader), just perform a reinstallation of windows, but do not format the partition. You will have to copy your documents and settings folder to the new user account and reinstall some software, but you won't have to do a real backup. I call it an overlapping installation. |

| Apex Master Tech | There is also a quick fix for this. By going to the recovery console via the Windows XP cd, you can usually get away with just typing these two commands: fixmbr and fixboot Those two commands usually work when I see the NTLDR missing (Which is the NT Loader, or the boot loader for Windows XP). Also, if those don't work a simple repair install will do the trick and no backup is necessary. I believe jedco touched on this, but what you do is load up the Windows XP cd as if to install as normal, go through the regular install procedure and after you get the screen about agreeing to the terms and pressing F8, the install will find a Windows installation, DO NOT install over it, simply press R at this screen to perform a repair install. Once windows boots up you'll have all of your files on your computer, but you will have to go to Windows Update to make sure you are up to date with everything. If you're having problems with software, it's probably due to the lack of updates, so make sure to get those right after the install finishes.

| Apex Tech Maniac | I have not had any luck with the repair installation. I've tried it several times, and it's never worked for me (or system restore, for that matter). Could just be bad luck, but now I opt to enter the windows setup, and install as normal, except electing not to format the hard drive and selecting the option that says "install to c:\windows and delete the existing installation" or whatever. By all means, try the recovery console first (although, I haven't had heaps of luck witht that, either). Unless you've been messing with your file system recently, I might prepare myself for a HDD replacement, if I were you. J |
