Have to agree, Ive got along with Service Pack 2 just fine. Had nothing out of the oridinary happen yet. What I did do that most other people probably didnt was install it right after installing XP with SP1 as a completly fresh install.

| G-Hoe-Lden Hearted | I haven't installed it yet and don't plan to for awhile if ever, but somehow or other, probably due to our negligence, the Microsoft automatic update download thing got turned on and while my husband was using the internet, it downloaded a bunch of updates including Service Pack 2. Now it's sitting there asking to be installed. Is there any way to get rid of this? I'm afraid if one or the other of us accidentally clicks on the icon, it will install SP2 and I'm not sure my older computer with some ancient software programs on it as well as archaic hardware peripherals can handle it. When the computer isn't running, I get the shakes. Any suggestions for getting rid or disabling the Windows update icon so we won't accidentally click it and install SP2 against our Will? Thanks!

Start>Run>Type "services.msc" without quotes and hit enter> Right-Click the service titled "Automatic Updates" in the list>Click Properties> Select "Disabled" from the drop down menu and click Stop>Apply and Exit. That should do the trick. No more automatic updates wasting your time, clock cycles, and bandwidth. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| DuckWarrior's Personal Quack Hoe | I have not installed it yet and really do not plan it either..a good friend up here at work now shows 9 or 10 navigatable desktops when he goes into windows explorer, and also kicks him out on a regular basis for no reason at all (when directly conencted to the box, not over internet)..

| G-Hoe-Lden Hearted | Dear TekXolD, Thank you very much! It looks like it worked and the little Windows update icon thing went away. Whew that was close because human nature is to accidentally hit the wrong key or pass too close to the icon and then it'd be for me!Thanks!

| Light My Fire | i have seen SP2 take 3 Dells of different models (including 1 laptop) that were of fresh installs, and turn them into rebooting nutcases... EDIT: actually, only two of them rebooted indefinately, the other just BS'd during bootup, and remained this way despite restore points, Winternals administrative elimination of everything that looked suspicious, a complete windows repair, and ever manner of fix other than just reformatting and installing xp SP1....which we did... if you own a Dell (dimension xxxx) stay clear, you have been warned, and if it worked out for you, thats great... i got 2 hours of overtime today because of SP2, and the last 4 computers i repaired were the direct result of SP2, no, im not kidding.... SP1, the choice for the user who likes using their computer....

![]() ![]() ![]() | On a side note regarding services, I found this little tidbit the other day, boasted my performance a little on my desktop and laptop, however it may have been the culprit in the failure of my neighbor's rig that he keeps over here for gaming... so use at your own risk.Doh! You'll want this, won't you... http://www.overclockersclub.com/guid...services_2.php Last edited by Peng Lord; 11-October-04 at 11:12 PM. |

![]() | concidering that i do SP2 support for microsoft, i have dealt with hundreds and hundreds of cases with sp2, now mind you I'm not saying that microsoft isn't at fault, but 99% of the issues with sp2 are related to third party software and drivers. Most venders were given over a years notice to make their software and drivers compatible with sp2, however most of them decided to ignore the warning and not do so, that is where the problem lies. With sp2 there is less then a 1% callback rate, meaning that only 1% of the people isntalling are having issues, compared to other service packs that average a 6% callback rate. Just a little tidbit of information. I have sp2 on 3 systems at my house and everytime i fix a system for someone I install sp2 on it. SP2 for isntalling sp2 the best way to install it is by downloading the full network download at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en , saving it to your desktop and installing it in safe mode, however before you install it be sure to update all hardware drivers, do virus scans and do spyware scans along with a diskcleanup. I find that windows udpates does screw up a majority of the time. Anyway sp2 is a personal choice and there is not going to be any forced upgrade or anything as long as you have you automatic updates, so for me and 99% of the other people who installed it, there were no issues, but i'm sure some of you might just be in that 1% and 1% of millions is a lot lol |
