Gentoo hates me.

For the life of me, I can't get Gentoo to install.

Id like to be able to go from a Stage I setup, and also use the gaming kernal.

The farthest I've been able to get is to building the gentoo-sources kernal, using a Stage III install. And that is with the beta 2004.2 x86 cd... as the 2004.1 cd won't detect my network settings.

Im rather frustrated.

Gentoo doesn't like anyone, once it's set up, you're good though.

I can deal with an OS that doesn't like anyone... try imaging a lab full of Mac G4's. Theres some mutual hate for ya lol. I don't know how to deal with an OS that doesn't seem to like the idea of even getting itself installed.

Heres a semi-cohearant list of my problems:
Stage I will die when I attempt to update my Portage tree. I think.
Stage II will die when I attempt to compile my programs, the first one actually.
Stage III will die when I attempt to compile a kernal.

Granted, I was attempting this on an old P2 400 we had lying around at work; I wanted to get an idea of what I was in for if I attempt it on one of my own systems.

What exactly is the carrot on the stick that I'm jumping at anyway? (whats my reward for all my trouble- why is Gentoo > say, SuSe?)
