Default No Icons on desktop.... weird

ok...
So I was letting one of my friends use my laptop and all I know is that he was doing some work in DOS. The one thing I asked him to do is to change everything back to the way it was when he was done. Well guess what.... he didnt..

Anyways, I turn it on for the first time after he was done. Everything is working fine except for the fact there is no icons on the desktop and I cant get them back. I have no idea what he did to get rid of them but I cant get them back. Anyways, any help on how to get them back would be awesome

btw, I dont even have a trash can
