Default Virus

My friend has a virus, he says it slows his computer down about 50%. And whenever he trys to go to any virus scan site such as http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ it closes the site down right away. This also happens with programs ( it uninstalls the virus scanner). Anyone know how to fix this?

Have you tried safe mode - or try http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_remtext.php?id=bagbugnet

They have a command line scanner vcleaner.exe - it only will help on certain viruses but its worth a shot. Also in safe mode try AdAware as well.

Here's my procedure. Works 95% of the time:

1. Boot into safe mode
2. Bring up Task Manager. Find any suspicious processes and terminate them. (Generally, just shut down anything that doesn't have SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE in the User Name column.) Write down the names of the processes you terminate.
3. Run a program that lets you modify the startup section of the registry (you can also do it directly in the registry if you know how). I recommend Spybot - Search&Destroy or System Mechanic. (The added bonus of Spybot is that is also has a task monitor, which allows you to see the physical location in the directory structure of the programs responsible for particular processes.) Check whatever you find there with this list. (Also use it to check processes from point 2.) Write down and remove any entries that you can identify as virus-related.
4. Using the info from the startup list, delete the virus files form the disk (they will usually be hidden or marked as system files, so make sure that "show hidden files" in the vie options is checked and "hide protected system files" unchecked.)
5. Run regedit and search for any references to the programs you wrote down at stage 3. If you find any, delete them.
6. Restart in normal mode, install anti virus software, update the definitions, run a complete system scan. Do the same with Spybot and AdAware.

It's a royal pain in the butt, but it works. It also goes to show why you should always have good AV/spyware scanner with the most current definitions.

Hope this helps.

People who don't update their virus scanners DAILY deserve whatever they get.

FFR* the blasted thing.

* FFR = Fdisk, Format & Reinstall

I don't use a virus scanner at all except for the online ones from trendware or whatever like once a month. I just scanned my computer last night and no viruses I guess I'm setting myself up to get a virus now so I better knock on some wood

Sounds like it...

If it's a matter of just being cheap, then download and install AVG - it's free.

No, it's what you use to REPARTITION your hard drive. You use the FORMAT command to format the hard drive.
