| Apex Master Tech | Ok, my friend gave me a CD full of good 80's music, with a ton of MP3s. I wanted to make a few mix CDs out of it for my jack and Jill party for my Fiance. When I try to copy certain songs off the CD, I get this error (pic below). Does this mean that the file is corrupt, or is my burner all frigged up? |

| Apex Tech God | Well - can you play the mp3s off the CD and do they play normally??? I would guess the disc itself is screwy but that would just be a guess.........you might also try doing a disc copy of the CD, maybe that will work then you can use that copy to pull songs off. Try a few things to narrow it down. |

| Apex Master Tech | ok... tried copying the CD... took about 20 minutes to make an image of the CD, which leads me to believe that the disc had a few errors. But now, even after I copied the CD, I still had errors with the same songs, and I can't even play them from the original CD. I had no errors playing the MP3 cd in my car earlier... so I have no idea what could be wrong. |

| Apex Tech God | cyclic redunancy error hey? thats one for the dictionary. if anything, from the phrase its put in and where its placed (upon copying music) it sounds like the CD has simply stopped spining (?) and failing to read. This obviously isnt whats going on unless your drive is dying. id agree with a disk to disk burn, and then try copying over. to save cds use a CDRW. Otherwise check the cd for any scrathces and hold it up to a light to check for holes in the aluminium film. otherwise use an apporopiate dd cleaner to remove finger prints and smudges which may also affect the transfer.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Please don't tell me you guys don't know what a CRC error is. ![]() CRC: Cyclical Redundancy Check Cyclical: because the machine goes back to check Redundancy: redundant because it will do this more than once Check: it's checking (verifying) the data transmitted or copied. Read more about it here. That's one of the first things taught in PC tech school. (Right after 8 bits in a byte) A CRC error is simply the computer verifying the copy against the original. If the copy doesn't match the original, you get a CRC error. A couple things could be wrong. The easiest, and most common cause of this error is a dirty disc. Clean it properly using a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center of the disc to the outer edge in a straight line. DO NOT wipe 'around and around'. The second could be your drive is on it's way out as aaronrkelly said. The reason your car CD player can play is because it uses oversampling to compensate for the moving vehicle. It's another way of checking the data stream by interpolating data points where there are none. Read more here. PC CDROM's typically do not have oversampling on them. If the disc is not dirty, and your drive is new(er), then it could be that the original CD is corrupted.
