Default Deleting files in Vista

I've had vista a while and mostly like it. One of the problems I've noticed is that (for me at least) it's painfully slow to delete files. Even tiny files take 5-10 secs but the large ones (several GB's) take as long as a minute.

I'm just wondering if anyone else notices this and possibly has a solution. In XP it doesn't matter what the file size is, 3 seconds (at the most) and its gone.

Pre SP1 vista owners had this issue with that and copying files. Have you installed SP1? You might want to try the hot fix for the file transfer/delete.....

...after looking for the hot fix that was once there, it seems to be rolled up with the SP1. If you have installed SP1, maybe try to update or de/re SP1, but back up your data first!

Are you using a SATA drive? I had simular issues with Vista but not anymore. Are you fully updated? I know they released an update to address SATA speeds shortly after it was released, it helped a little. But since the service pack was released I haven't had any problems.

An update that improves the performance, responsiveness, and reliability of Windows Vista is available

An Ultra DMA Mode 5 device may perform only at the speed of an Ultra DMA Mode 2 device after you swap devices in Windows Vista

sometimes, i find it faster to shift+delete files - but be careful when doing this though. files deleted this way are potentially unrecoverable. i learned this the hard way in outlook

Since we are on the topic of deleting files, I came across a glitch between some machines that removes the recycle bin off the desk top with out permission. Truth be told the desktop icon settings was cleared. To have the recycle bin back on the desktop simply follow these steps.

Right click desktop/Personalize/change desktop icons (in the left column). There one can see all the default icons of yesteryear, computer,user's files, network, recycle bin, and control panel.

yeah, i've seen that happen once or twice before. i remove the recycle bin icon on purpose, as i have it in my rocket dock all the time. if you want to remove the recycle bin icon, just do this - but make sure you back up your registry if you do; so that you can go back if you want to:

open regedit by going to start>run and type regedit and hit enter. navigate to following entry in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\
Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

delete that entry. this should remove recycle bin from your desktop.
