Default Windows XP has a bad attitude problem. *sigh*

Grrrr. I havent touched my PC since yesterday afternoon, i can hardly look at the darn thing. The XP Reboot problem wont leave me alone! It only does it when i try to play games (Counter-Strike, Global Operations, DoD, etc) I can loop 3d Mark for any amount of time i want, i can run SETI for hours with no problems. But somewhere deep in the registry of my machine something is telling my PC to reboot or sound-loop crash any time I try to have fun with her!

I have tried turning off sound accelleration in dxdiag and that worked for about 20 minutes...then bang, bang, bang, bang sound loop hang. Sometimes it can recover and end task, other times it wont allow me to end the hanging process and i have to hard-reboot. I hate doing that!

The "system" by all accounts is stable in theorhetical benchmarks but realworld use is giving me nightmares. I was thinking of a reformat but before i get home today and do that i will wait for opinions from you guru's. Thanks thanks, all of ya!

try backing up all your mp3s/documents/saved games and reformat your drive, its like starting over with that fast system before all the clutter slows it down, i do it about once every 2 months

I had a similar problem once with Windows 2000 and a GeForce 256. Every so often (seemingly randomly) the box would hard lock, sometimes causing the sound loop. Reinstalling the chipset drivers fixed my problem *shrug*.

yeah, did a reformat and a bios "update" I had been using that "overclocked" bios that came from the soyo web site.....i went back and that thing isnt even approved for my mobo exclusivly...so i "downgraded" to the "normal" bios and so far narry a blip.

Also upgraded sound drivers from the site....disabled the RAID on my board and down-clocked my Video card...well, between all of that, so far, i havent had any hicups and my 3D Marks score is still above 10,000 Cant complain at all there.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Other thing you might look at is certain programs if it happens in the future...

Easy CD-Creator will cause your system to not shut down if you don't download a patch from them.

I've run into randomn reboots myself... every time it happens, I update my drivers and wait... it'll be good as gold until I load somethin' new up and there she blows!

I like Win XP more than 98, ME, 2000 and NT... but I gotta say it can really piss ya off at times!

Unhappy

I have the same board as you BZA and am having the same problem....freeze-ups during intense gaming causing a sound loop. RTCW is fine in single player, but multi player uses more resources, causing it to freeze(im guessing). IE6 is also giving me lock-ups on a few animated banner ads.

It seems to be happening less and less now but, it still happens every so often. Maybe there is something wrong with the board design. I'm still debating wether to exchange it for an MSI kt333 ARU.

OMFG_dude_WTF, I have that MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU board and it kicks ass! I have not had any problems at all with it so far (knocks on wood) and on top of that, it looks cool as hell, especially with an MSI GeForce4 to match (red pcb also)
Just thought I'd offer my 2 cents worth : )
