Default Windows Processes and what they are for.

While surfing around today I stumbled across a nice list of Windows Running Processes and what they are for. I was looking up what khooker was and found out it is a pretty much useless app that runs for SIS chipset laptops for multimedia features.

I will make this topic a sticky since this resource is a GREAT help when trynig to track down the things you have running and how to get rid of the stuff you DON'T want to run.

also a great resource is http://www.blackviper.com/ is is what I have always used for service explanations and has templates for DEFAULT,
"SAFE", Internet Gateway, Gaming, Super Tweak modes for your pc in 2000 or XP as well as what the services do, their process name and their dependencies

Here is a liilte something for cutting back on what loads at startup, you can disable or enable them

Start Menu- Run- services.msc

NOTE: If you are going to disable anything make ABSOLUTLY SURE that you want them not to run at startup

ALSO letting windows control your page file helps too!

One of the greatest freeware programs I've come across is Process Explorer.

I have been using Process Explorer and the BlackVipr Windows services guide. They work very well for me.

I am not familiar w/ BlackVipr, but I tell you what. . . Process Explorer definitlely ranks up there as one of the most vital pieces of software that I use.

just a quick reminder from someone that messed this up already. if you are going to play with your services, copy your hardware profile and rename it to whatever. when you check on your services you can disable it for just one profile to see how stable your system is.

While not freeware, I have an upcoming review of some software that allows for process "presets".
It is very interesting indeed for those that have use/need for it.

Thank you SO much for posting this link. I went from 34 to 22 processes running after startup! It boots up in like 2 seconds now lol.

Default Thanks!

The nice people at tech support had me disable all startup items, but I was a little hesitant to start turning off system apps. Thanks for the guides, these should really speed up the old boy.
