Default School Computers Randomly Crash

I've got an internship with the local school, and some of the computers have started to lock up while in windows. For example, after 30 some seconds after you get the logon screen, it will just lock up, no mouse movement or nothing. I have checked the bios to see if the CPU is getting too hot but it's under 40C, and the automatic CPU shut off is set to like 55. We have also formatted the drive and started over, and also stuck in another hard drive with windows on it, and it seemed to do the same thing. The specs are below:

About 2-3 years old
Windows 98
Duron 700 mhz
Geforce MX 400
WD 40 gig Hard Drive
Asus Mobo

Any help would be useful, thanks.

Obviously a software problem, or perhaps even a network problem since the machine would most likely run just fine standing alone. What OS are they running? Check on the network connections and hardware to see if they're lagging out and make sure everything is functioning properly.

Could it be possible that, idle in your bios its 40C then when it starts loading and its thinking it heats up past 55C? If you can open them up and see it the fan on the cpu is still spinning at the right speed or at all.

The fans seem to be spinning just fine. They are all running 98 and we've unplugged it from the network. We've stuck in another hard drive with windows 98 on it already and it did the same thing.

Dang you guys are ridin' high with those PC's, our school uses crappy-ass Compaq Pentium 200's, and the CAD machines use PII 400's I think, and the main server is a dual 550 Crapaq, I remember when I was in Drafting III on days where we were working on huge projects like a whole house with funrniture that required gobs of processing power, I would bring in Short Circuit and work on that PC.

Of course the 80MM tornado fan could be heard outside in the halls while it was going.

Sounds liek a networking problem of some kind.

OMG TYCOON I never told anyone here what we used to do in Drafting on Fridays

We used to play Delta Force on LAN, it was installed on all the PC's by one of the students and the teacher hosted the game on his PC, and the majority of the class got on and we played all period, I remember one such map where I would climb up on this sniper tower and pick people off, then the guy next to me saw where I was camping and yelled 'Jesse's camping the sniper tower!!' Of course immediately I would get whacked by someone from behind as they camp up the ladder.

If we stay in the logon screen and not even log on, it'll still freeze up eventually. What kind of networking problem would it be?

Hmmmm, then again it might be a BIOS setting. Wat speed it the RAM and wat speed is it running at? Crucial PC100 doesn't run at 133 on Short Circuit well.
