Default XP Won't install

When installing Win XP Pro, i get through to the set-up (after the first reboot) and get a parameter incorrect error. It brings up the folder \asms. i have tried a few different ways to install:

1. preformatting the drive to FAT32...
2. re-preformatting the drive to NTFS....
3. zero formatting and having the install format to NTFS on the long format style.
4. Installing Win 98 and trying to update.
5. Installing Win 98SE and trying to update.
6. Trying to above on a full partition (first the 120Gb was partitioned to 100/20, then to just 120)...
7. Trying the above on a new 20Gb drive.

It is driving me insane, as i am needing my desktop up and running for AutoCAD.

My dad had the same issue a few weeks ago after he went to XP. Disable your 3 1/2" floppy, and select your CD Rom as your 1st boot device. have you done that?

ya i just installed xp on my new comp a few weeks ago and thats what i had to do, make the cd rom drive the first to boot up. Go into bios and i think its boot > boot priority. Start up with the xp cd in the cd rom and xp should boot. Follow the instructions and you should be set, if that doesnt work, then im clueless.

Well....i have disabled the floppy, still same problem...

The first screen that i get is a fatal error dialog box that says:
"An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

The parameter is incorrect.

Press OK to view the Setup log file."

The Second dialog box that comes up says:

"Error:
Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message: The parameter is incorrect.

Fatal Error:
One of the blah, blah (same as first message)"

I have this same problem and wondered if you ever fixed it and what the solution was.
Thanks

if this installation is being done on the same hard drive, and the CD is not damaged, then the CD ROM or hard drive is junk...

if you have tried several hard drives, and the CD is not damaged, then your motherboard or CD ROM drive is junk...

if you are using a burned copy of XP, use a different copy, or a legit copy, try the CD on a different computer and if it has the same problems, then the CD is junk...

if you are using an intel system, then your computer is junk
