Question dxtrans.dll cyclic redundancy?

I'm trying to install Service Pack 1a on a system running XP Pro. Everytime I try to install it through either the online version or the network installation file (the 120+ MB file DL), I eventually get an error message saying "C:\windows\system32\dxtrans.dll is open or in use by another program" and yadda yadda.
I've tried renaming and deleting the file in both XP and the safe mode command promt, and then the error message I get is "...cannot delte file (cyclic redundancy check)."

I think this means something is physically wrong with the file on the hard drive, but I'd hate to think the only way to fix the problem would be to re-install XP Pro. Any ideas?

Does anyone know of a program that I can DL to implicitly delete the file?

THANKS!

That file is a DirectX Transform Core DLL. I'd uninstall DirectX, then reinstall DX9b after SP1a is installed.

CRC is a form of checksum, if a CRC error occurs it usually means an error or curruption within the file on the disk. Could just be a bad file, or your hard drive may be heading south on a permanent vacation.

Uninstall DirectX and then re-install it AFTER installing the Service Pack 1a? I'll give that a shot, once I figure out how to do that...

Otherwise, how can I test the HD itself to figure out if it was just the file that was corrupt or if there is a problem with the HD? It's less than a year old and otherwise hasn't shown any other problems whatsoever. Know any good HD diagnostic progs?

I'll let you know if it worked. Thanks for the advice though. Think I should be worried?

Question

Well, I uninstalled DirectX using the program TekXoid linked to, but when I try installing the service pack again I keep getting the exact same error message. I think I need to find a program to either remove or rename the dxtrans.dll file, but I can't seem to find one.

Any other ideas, or any programs that might help? Nothing seems to have changed since removing DirectX (by the way, yes, I have restarted the PC)?

Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone had to fix "cyclic redundancy" errors in the past? I can only imagine that you had to do SOMETHING about it, but frankly, I can't figure out anything to do except re-install XP, and I sure am getting tired of having to do that...

I know there are file-deletion APPS out there, but I can't seem to find one. Has anyone used an app like that? I'm still waiting to hear from Microsoft, by the way...and yes, I DO need the Service Pack...

Bite the bullet and just try a reinstall - its isnt that bad. When I was troubleshooting my motherboard I was doing it like two or three times a day. MicroAss was getting tired of talking to me.

OK, maybe what my REAL problem is I don't have a good way to backup an IMAGE of my XP install, so that I can make a backup of the OS once it is installed with the right drivers and everything. I have tried "Ghost", but that didn't exactly work worth a damn. Anyone know of any good ones that don't take all day to run either?

$70?!?!?!? Ok, then reinstalling Windows is not THAT much of a pain in the butt. I mean damn--I could nearly buy another copy of XP for that! Good grief...

Install System Mechanic, and use Incenerator to delete the file.
