Default Windows Explorer issue

I have a comp with win xp that was working fine and still does for the most part,
however, any time I try to use windows explorer it will open and then my desktop will refresh and explorer closes.
I noticed this earlier this week but I didn't have time to pursue it
It doesn't matter where I try to start explorer like right clicking a folder inside another folder or using the explorer icon it always refreshes back to the desktop
Otherwise everything seems to work fine
Any ideas?

how much memory do you have? I had a similar problem that was memory related. Turned out a stick went bad.

it has 3 128 k sticks
I will try removing one at a time and see if that does anything

Have you tried a repair install? It might do the trick without having to reinstall XP altogether.
Also, there are software alternatives to Explorer out there that are just as good, if not better, than Explorer.
For example:

A43

Universal Explorer

or a few of the apps here

OPERA or MyIE2 ,although i don't know how ie2 will handle a broken installation of explorer.both have the benifits of being skinnable and having tabbed browsing.

Scan for viruses, if it comes up clean, run a repair install.
If it finds something, run a repair install anyway after you remove the virus/trojan/worm.
I think that something malicious of that sort is to blame for the screwed up explorer.exe.
