Default Copying from Desktop to Folder

Alright so this has been bugging me for a while. I go to move a word file or any file for that matter to a folder and it copies the file to the folder instead of moving the file itself.

What I would like to have happen is to move the file to the specified folder and not have the object sitting on my desktop anymore. So it takes one move and me not having to come back and delete the file i just moved off the desktop.

Any help is appreciated guys/gals.

Thank you!

Ever heard of the 'cut' function?

Just select the file, press 'control-x', navigate to the destination folder, and then press 'control-v' to paste it in.

Was that what you wanted?

Hey Reflux, lol yes I do know the cut function and copy paste along with all the short cuts. What I'm getting as is how to set windows or the desktop so that when I want to move a file from the desktop (by click and drag) to a folder that it moves the actual file and doesn't simply put a copy of the file that's on the desktop onto the folder. I like to keep my desktop clean and without a lot of clutter and it's annoying to have to put it in the folder then go back to the desktop to delete the file that's sitting "on" or "in" the desktop folder...lol depending on how in depth with windows analogies you want to get.

Does this make any sense?

I know exactly what you're getting at, don't worry. Unfortunately I don't know how to change it... I find it quite annoying sometimes too.

I don't know why Windows thinks when you drag and drop something, you want to make a copy of it. I would assume that most people want to move it, not copy...

I heard someone ranting about this whole dragging to copy thing a while back. Basically he suggested if you don't like it you should switch to Mac OS

Honestly though, just cut and paste stuff, it's what I do all the time and if you are a l337 h4x0r with a glowing keyboard you can do it just as fast as dragging.

Right click drag, and when you drop click move on the menu.

Edit: Or apparently you can hold shift down while dragging and dropping.

Damn windows sometimes. There has got to be a setting for this somewhere because some other computers that i've used do not do this. When you click and drag the file to a folder it moves the entire file, not just copies it.

The support is much appreciated. Thank you.

From what I've read that the default for drag and drop on the same drive it's move but if it's two different drives then it copies. This is to prevent data loss.

ding..ding..ding! You, my friend, have answered my question. It was really perplexing me and as soon as you said that I was like that makes sense. Since I have 2 hd's but 1 is partitioned it really does mean having two different drives. So I dragged a file from my desktop which is default C: and just opened up another folder in that hd - which I reserved just for windows incase it wanted to mess up again - and it put the file right there without copying it.

But I have most of my main files on a different partition and then also backed up on another hd, thus why it was not moving the file but copying it from one "hd" to the other "hd" because they are partitioned and not acting as one entity but two.

Thank you!

if you want to use another method, you can drag and drop using the mouse pointer >>> if you hold down shift while dragging and dropping, this will ALWAYS copy the file; holding down ctrl ALWAYS cuts, or rather, moves.
