| Umm so I have this super werid problem... Two days ago I plugged in a TV tuner card and then my computer says that my eithernet cord is unplugged. Well I check the cord its fine, remove TV tuner card, still no go, try reinstalling drivers, no luck. Finally I say screw it, reformat and reinstall right? Well I go through the Windows reinstall from Boot CD, select the windows partition and hit delete and reformat to NTFS. All goes fine throughout the install process, I get to the end and it looks like I have a fresh copy of windows when it first loads. Then the Second time it loads its my original XP... formating didn't work. Now before I try killdisk anyone know whats going on? When I go to Hardware manager it says "BIOS pnp something or other failed to load" tried the troubleshoot and it went away... completely I really don't know what to do. If something hardware is broken, I swear next time I'm just getting a damn Dell... | ||

| I wouldnt get a dell if i was you there ok but have alot of hardware problems. is your nic integrated or is it a seperate card if its integrated i would check your motherboard look for any black spots or capacitors that are raised and puffy in the center they should all be flat but thats a sign that your board is going out when there all puffy.*edit* You may also be having issues with heat/dust buildup How is the air flow in your case? You dont have a clear acrylic case either do you? i used to have a clear acrylic case and i had the same sorta problems only with my video card and ram for some reason static would build up and short out devices. | To Xgeko2: I'll check the board for bad caps, I'm wondering if I didn't bump one too hard when putting the card in. Second the airflow in my steel case is fine, but I don't have the i/o shield on so maybe that may be doing something. To Drougnor: Thanks, one question though, can I format just one partition or do I have to do a whole drive? Just an FYI, my computer/windows still works fine, just it won't recognize that my ethernet is plugged in. Also this isn't a new build, so its something recent that did this. | ||

when you plug the ethernet in, do the lights on the nic light up?

And this is what I get for skimming . . . sheesh . . . *laughs* I retract the former software recommendation and aim you instead to GParted. It's a *nix based live cd that you can use to partition the drive in anyway you want, including formating separate partitions. As far as the other issue with the network goes, double check the bios settings to be sure that the onboard NIC wasn't deactivated by a bios glitch. d

| awsome good job! but you might want to be careful if it was shorting something out make sure you have no bare wires if u do just tape them up with electrical tape carefully because thats a real quick way to fry some hardware i fried my old amd 1800+ system that way had too many fans and i used scotch tape on one of the sets of wires that i wired into some molex y adapters lol it was deffinitly a learning experience! | ||
