Default Linking Vista to XP

Hey all, how's things.

So I bought my first lappy yesterday, a Toshiba with a AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58, and it's pretty nice. Its the first time I've ever run Vista, so I'm still trying to find my way around. Now then, I have this box that I was using before I got the laptop, an XP Pro box, and I'm trying to access the files on it from the Vista laptop. I've gone through a giant amount of tutorials and have followed them, from adding the computers to the same work group to enabling the file and printer sharing on both. Firewalls are all down but I still cannot get it to work.

Also, both are on the same network, with the XP box being hardwired and the Vista laptop wireless.

tl;dr? I want to access XP Pro files from Vista and vice versa.

Could you guys be of any assistance? Please?

Awesome.

To enable file sharing on the XP box, did you run the network setup wizard? That always works for me when we connect new machines to our network.

When you say "hardwired" what do you mean? If you're using a direct connection from one to the other you have to use a crossover cable rather than the standard cables you would use when you have a router or hub.

Other than that, what Dex said.

I think he meant the XP Pro machine is connected to the network (i.e. the router) via your standard CAT5, where as the Vista craptop is wireless, so yeah there should be no problems configuring the two to see each others shared folders.

I setup my sisters Vista craptop to do that over Christmas whilst home, and im sure all I did was run the network setup wizard on both machines.

Sorry, yes I did mean that the desktop (XP Pro) was hooked up via CAT5 to the router while the laptop (Vista Premium) is using wireless. I did use the Network Configuration Wizard but to no avail. The XP machine doesn't even see itself in the My Network Places window on XP.

It's fixed. The problem was that one of the machines was in DMZ plus mode while one was getting the net normally. They both needed to get the internet normally without being DMZ'd, in my case with maximum protection on from my router. Yay! Thanks all.

Never heard of DMZ mode. Sounds like something from a Dragon Ball Z video game, but glad you got it sorted
