Default Harddrive issue

i have done lots of searching , and it seems to be a common problem , but i never see any on that has a solution..

i had a system and everything was detected. just having some random issue so i decieded to reformat. it was set up like this

harddrive one: 250 gb
50gb partion with xp
80gb partion with vista
100gb partion for storage.

harddrive two: 320gb storage.

all use ntfs and before the format both OS's could access all partions.

i reninstalled xp and vista back onto the partions that they where orginally on.
now only the partions on the 250gb are showing up in both oses. but on both os it says that the 320 gb drive is 137 gb and its file system is "RAW".

this drive is almost full of media and software, so i am trying my best to not have to format it.
i had a similar issue when i first installed the 320 6 months ago. but it some how kinda fixed its self.

now i know the drive is good cause the diagnostics say tis fine. so i really dont think its the drive thats the issue. coud the install of one of the oses mess up the ntfs or maybye something with the mbr?

usually i like to be safe and would have unplugged the drive before i started, but it slipped my mind. i have really messed around alot with this, and tried the common things, but seem to get it.

hope thats enough info for yeah any help would be appreciated. even if its just links to other forums.

it sounds exactly like your system is running in a drive compatability mode (evident by only "seeing" 137GB).

you will likely have to install the original SATA drivers for both OS's, and afterward, you might even have to activate the physical volume before the logical drive will show up properly (right click on My Computer / Manage / Disk Management). in either case, your data should be perfectly safe, as long as you arent screwing with the file system or partitions.

if the hard drive in question is a Western Digital, then yes, this is exactly what you have to do...just find the original driver disc for your mobo/SATA controller and use them in lieu of windows trash drivers, because i can almost guarantee that the problem stems from that.

137 GB? or you sure it's not 127 GB?

i dont know why for Vista but for XP you'll need to update to SP2 if not XP wont see more then 127 GB so Update windows.

i think its because xp and vista are using the same "compatability" drivers. might work fine for some SATA controller/drive combinations, but you are still much better off using the drivers that came with the controller, or at least the updated ones from the manufacturers website.

i have the most recent drivers on both oses from the msi website.

after messing around with life guard data tools i got xp to see i 128 partion and 170, and it says the drive is 300gb now.
(300gb might be right depending on it calulates bytes)

but still says its in the "raw" format instead of ntfs. and in the life guard tools its says its fat 16, which makes no sense.

and yeah i have sp2 installed and the limit is 137 gb. not 127

completly slipped my mind. the drive showed up fine in windows xp, after i reinstalled it. it wasnt intill after i installed vista the this issue came about.

Also i installed xp from a disk and then had vista on my 320 gb harddrive and installed it from that location to the 80 gb partion on harddrive one.

Wonder what would happen if you re-installed XP after Vista install... if some compatibility drivers will be overwritten...
