![]() | After updating to the latest ZoneAlarm and installing World of Warcraft, I rebooted and got the dreaded BSoD. Stop: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x85670dae, 0x85a6641, 0x00000000) I can run in safe mode with no problems, but if I don't, the computer will always reboot and never load windows. This thread has some info, but the solution sounds more complicated than simply wiping and reinstalling windows XP home. Plus I can't find the program he mentioned. A little more info: -Running latest updates of WinXP Home SP2 -I uninstalled ZoneAlarm but no change in the problem -Running the latest Norton AV -I unplugged all peripherals (no change) -I had also just downloaded a zipped file from MegaUpload, extracted the contents, but had not opened the contents yet. So I may have gotten an evil proggie from that. -My registry looks fine (to me, anyway). Any thoughts? Should I just reinstall my operating system and never download random files from Rapidshare or MegaUplaod again?

![]() | Try updating your video driver in safe mode. If that doesn't work I would uninstall zone alarm. I would actually uninstall zone alarms anyway. Unless you are downloading porn executables or unsafe files virus protection IMO just slows down your hard drive. Windows firewall + defender are perfectly acceptable alternatives. |

![]() | Nothing overclocked. Tech specs are: -Asus A7N8X-e deluxe motherboard (socket A, aka 462) -AMD 3200+ barton cpu -1 gig of Crucial RAM -ATI Radeon 9700 pro (AGP 8x card) with I believe 128 MB of memory -40 gig SATA Seagate hard drive with the operating system -250gig of the same type for all data. -Plextor dual-layer dvd burner -zyxel G-302 U3 wireless adapter I should add that both of my month-old backup drives (running the same operating system) work just fine. I like to keep a small, separate drive for the operating system just for emergencies like this. Also running: -Directx 9.0c -ati catalyst drivers 7.7 (anything above 7.7 and some of my games don't work) I wonder if WoW installed some new drivers... I suppose I could try to remove and reinstall catalyst 7.7 in safe mode.

![]() | I removed the ATI drivers in safe mode and now it is booting up just fine. Now it just freezes up at the desktop. I think I hit some of the Norton AV functionality during my ham-fisted registry editing. I have learned my lesson.
