Default comp wont restart/shutdown after program fails

i just rolled back from vista because of small font problems, and im back to my old media center edt. but now there are programs randomly failing for no reason especally media player, IE7 and AIM. sometimes when itry to shut them down using task manager, they refuse to shut down, even if i try to end the process. and even if they do shut down, i end up unable to restart or shut down my computer, which makes me have to hold down the button or something. anyone know whats going on?

Sounds like your rollback just didn't work. if you can still access your important
files you need to back them up and then reinstall XP from scratch. Sorry

if you installed XP from scratch. This sounds more like a stability problem, Is the machine overclocked?

I don't know much about Vista -- refuse to use it, based on the experiences I'm reading about -- but someone on one of these threads mentiond something about how Vista reaches into the mobo itself during install. I'll see if I can find that info ... I just read it the other day ...

yes it is overclocked, had it from 2.8 to 3.5 on air, but i had a idea that it might have been overclocking so i lowered it to 3.0. didnt get better or worse. the comp is currently apart because im reinstalling my watercooling, but should be back up tonight.

Did you upgrade bios while on Vista?
Try to load default settings in bios, no overclock at all... and then go from there

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Load a new bios with defaults, then load the OS.

alright, i tried resetting the bios and reinstalling again, but it still happens. i also tried writing 0's to the drive. i did find out that the programs that im accually able to shut down still have its process running, and thats what i cant shut down. the programs randomly shut down, maybe because im trying to change a page on firefox or trying to open a song or video in WMP. its getting really irritating and im almost ready to switch back to vista, i didnt have these problems back in vista. the weird thing is im using the same install cd i used before i went to vista the first time. there still arent any scratches on the cd.
