Windows firewall is disabled. Default settings on WRT54G. Steam won't update and I can't connect to any online servers for any games, CoD and CoD2 doesn't work, none of my Steam apps work, ET doesn't work. WTFFFF.

Check the hosts file and empty it out if you need (just leave the local address). Beyond that, make sure you don't have any other software firewalls . . . Which version of windows, btw?

Silly question, but is your system set to the right date and time? I know some programs won't work without the correct date, as they check the server they are trying to connect to. Live Messenger for example...

Default for the hosts file is C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. Just open it in a text editor and delete everything except the stuff at top (the lines that start with #) and the local host address.

What are you running for antivirus? alot of avi software has built in firewalls now.

also go to a command prompt and type:

netstat -a

then start steam

then type

netstat -a -o -n

look for a new connection,

from there it should give you a pid (process id number)

open up task manager, go to change to the process tab

then got to view --> select colums, and add the pid,

and then see if the new process is steam. if its not, steam is probly blocked by somthing.

I have no anti-virus or additional firewall software, I don't open anything I don't know and I don't visit pr0n sites.

I have two extra gaming machines I'm gonna load Steam and a couple other games on them and see if they work from there, because if they do, then reformat / reinstall. Not that I mind, this is the ORIGINAL install I did back in 04 for my DFI Lan Party NFII, when it was still a 150 dollar board.

Router is removed, everything works now.

Cable company FTMFW.
