Default Slow bootup

I am running Win xp and the bootup time is longer than it should be. Is there a way to stop the bios from passing RAM, or is there another way to find out why it is so slow?

Aaahhh, noobs...
First what are your system specs, as in what mobo, cpu, ram and hdd do you have?
How long does it take to boot?
Have you made any changes that made it run slower etc

Is your computer taking a long time to get past the Bios before it starts to load Win XP or after the Bios Win Xp takes longer than what you think? - - your post does not clarify.

Is it a clean install or have you been running XP for a while and now it is slow.

BTW...welcome to PR

You guys are asking questions that make my head spin. I have been running XP for about 9 months. Pen 3 CPU 500 RAM 526.It has been running slower since a new printer was installed ,but I don't think it is the problem. It was worse (10 min) and Dell tech had me disable something in the bios concerning USB and it was working correctly. I have disconnected the printer and it still is taking too long (5min). When I observe the setup screen during bootup it takes the longest just before it says 526 RAM passed. Hope this helps answer your questions.

Is there one or more places where this information is located. Or is there a program that I can download which will gather all this info for me?

Making your head spin asking questions means we are trying to help you...it's a good thing!

So it is the BIOS that is taking so long to boot...go into the bios and "Restore Defaults" and "Save". Then let us know what happens.

If these guys can't find one specific thing wrong with your system it might just be that you need to clean it up a little and optimize your settings. Check out the links here under "Virtual Modifications". Definetly look through the Bios guide, systems config, windows xp "cleaning", and the new one I found on how to optimize all your startup programs. If you go through these you should noticeably decrease your startup time.

To get into the Dell BIOS press 'F2' while the memory is counting. then load the default settings like Taz said.

I went into the bios and restored default settings, which resulted in the bootup time being slower than before. I then enbled "quick boot mode" and disabled "legacy USB Support", with the time agin being slow but not as longer as before when legacy was enabled. I will try the things suggested in the last thread.

Bootvis according to Microsoft is worthless, and has been tried. Is there a way for the bootup not to go thru the RAM process, because that is where it apears slow. I have also rum misconfig and have a minimum of startup programs.

BootVis is not worthless, Dropped my bootup time quite a bit after using it. They simply no longer have it available for download because used improperly it manages to make a system un-bootable.
I'd like to see microsoft making fun of one of there own programs, thats never happened before.

And as for yout boot time, what do you expect, its an old 500MHz dell. Defrag HDD, update bios to latest version (available on support.dell.com) and enable "Quick POST" and "Quick Boot", disable all startup programs, and hope for the best.

I have to agree with Tek on both counts there.

I've had BootVis shave between 15-30 sec. average off boot-up times on mulitple rigs in the past.

Things are gonna be a little slow on 500megahorses, although 5-10 min? is a little long even with that proc.

Has the HDD began sounding any different over those months?

He's got to have a problem in his hardware detection or a serious problem with his bios.

When you go into the Bios, do your devices appear right away (hard drive/cd rom)? Do you have a usb legacy device (ie usb keyboard)?

Everything appears but is slow to navigate. I have all my USB devices plugged into a hub and my satellite modum is plugged directly into the computer.

It makes the BIOS skip some hardware tests in order to POST faster.

What do you mean slow to navigate? Slow to navigate in a program or just everything?
Check task manager and tell me if you see any tasks using 50-100% CPU.

In the boot process how long does it take for the post screen to clear and the XP Boot Screen to appear?
Don't just guess I want to know how many min and sec because I think your exaggerating, no way it takes 5-10 minutes to boot up. 486's outrun that.
I have a 100MHz P1 that boots in about 2½ minutes, and that's with 1/5TH the processing power you have. WTF...

Sounds like the BIOS is doing exhaustive memory tests. Enabling 'quick boot' mode should skip this. If it's not, then maybe there's a failure during POST, and it's testing the memory anyway. Could be that a RAM stick is going bad...

It takes 31/2 minutes for the bootup process to get to the XP professional screen. I ran Bootvis and optimized my system. Where is POST located in the BIOS and is it possible to stop the RAM testing?
