Question Can't install service pack?

Running XP pro, when I try to install the service pack, I get the following error:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer"

OK, I have found lots of people who had the same problem and fixed it by checking their crypt service and running the command prompt and whatever, but I have done all of that and I continue to get the same exact friggin' error. ANY ideas?

I tried everything I found on this web page, but with no success, and yes, I have since restarted the pc as well.

This is one of my main gripes about Microsoft, what average consumer is going to know what the hell that means. That kind of crap is what made me buy a Mac for productivity, and a PC for games.

Might want to go through yoru registry in the CURRENT CONTROL SET and see if there is a previous install lurking in there...but I don't think that would be a cause

Thanks. I'm lost--can't figure out how or why this would happen, and it's total garbage. I'll just have to wait until I find another good idea to try.

Um, kinda helped, although I still can't install the service pack 1, which is what I need to do before doing anything on the link you sent. My problem is that I CAN'T install that first service pack! AHH! I can't figure out why, and I have tried everything I have been told to do.

Any other ideas?

Nope. Still can't install the service pack, which is probably the only problem I will have, 'cause I'm thinking once that is taken care of, everything else will be a snap.

Ok, first off, the main thing that will cause that error is a pirated version of Windows? If that's what it is, fess up now, cause you won't be able to use the service packs so you should just stop now

That is true, any bootleg copy of Windows XP or Office XP will not take any kind of service pack update.

Like already mentioned, it sounds like youre possibly trying to update a questionable version of XP to me.

You may have better luck doing some Google surfing rather than bringing the topic to PR forums Greydawg.

Not true at all. Even if it is pirated it will allow you to dl sp1 and all updates you just need a legit serial number. Even if he had a bootleg xp it would just give him a bad serial error.

True, true, if it IS legal, then run the administrative tool "services", select the "Cryptographic services" turn it on automatic and start it. That should let you use the windows tool.

Of course you could always just use the .exe version of SP1 and download that
