Default Massive Word files

Has this ever happened to anyone before?

Im writing up my final year project at uni. Bit of beast but something odd just happened.

I added a table!!!!
Now clearly this is a bad thing to do as the file size has just jumped from ~20Mb to 47Mb!!!!!!!

The whole thing is taking about a month and a half to do anything.

Anyone got any idea what causes this to happen? Ive now deleted the table but the file is still 47Mb... which is just silly!

Ive done the whole 'compress pictures' thing... now im out of ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's never happened to me, most of mine stick around 22Kb on their own.
If nothing works, just Ctrl+A and paste it onto a new document, save it, and work from that one.

Unless that file stays 44Kb, then it's something in the formating of the text.

But copying the text should leave you with just text and nothing that Word has left lying around.

ok, im a bit confused ....

are we talking kb or mb here ???

in any case, if the file still shows 47, there might be hidden markups

in the document ..... pressing CTRL+A is no good because even if you

paste everything into a new document it'll also paste the hidden stuff ....

(only applies to office document, not windows files)

just open a new document, select the text that you need from your old one

and paste it onto the new one .... save it and watch the file size decrease

Problem with that is all my headers and footers would be lost...

The file has loads of section breaks with different headers and footers etc etc...

Would be an absolute nightmare to copy it all over

Do you think sitting in the corner and crying will make it work better? lol

thats easy.

Word tracking is enabled. Every time you make a change to the document, it is saved in the document.

Press Cntrl + shift + e

I cant remeber how to disable it... but this will bring up the tool bar, and you can see what changes have been made to it.

That's why I suggested copying the text. I didn't assume he had headers and such.

Weeelllll...

Now i feel a bit stupid...

Just attempted a Ctrl-A, copy and paste and what do you know... it copied all my headers / footers / sections breaks... the lot! Down form 47Mb to about 8Mb... thats better

Im going to make sure word tracking is disabled from now on though...

Thanks again!

Sounds like somebody did a lot more work than me for ICT A-Levels...

I did however produce an 'vlookup' Excel formula which was about 350 characters long

It was actually 90MB... had to make some database and take pictures of everystep of the testing. That section alone was 200 pages. It was worth it my nice A grade.
