| Apex Master Tech | I impulse bought a x1950pro AGP as I needed a new graphics card and it was cheap compared to similar performance AGP cards. I run Ubuntu 6.10 as my main OS although I would consider using a very striped down Xp install along side it for the gaming. Just how bad are the ATI drivers for gaming compared to the Nvidia Linux drivers (which aren't the best!)... will I be able to play tux racer, ut2004, warzone 2100 and Hl1 based games (through wine) with them? like I can at the moment thanks |

When you're talking Linux - nVidia drivers are the best. No ifs and or but's about it. Coolbits even works happily under Linux.
You'll be able to play Tux Racer and UT2004 natively and very happily. HL1 and WarZone probably not as well, WINE is okay but you definately will tell it's emulated.

| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | CEDEGA has excelent support for windows games also if you have a new dual-core cpu that supports virtualization you can install windows and play that way I think that it is best to dual-boot though cause games just run good in windows also try out bzflag, scorched3d, and here is an open source fps like UT and tribes i guess Nexuiz did you try sudo apt-cache search ati | grep fglrx sudo apt-get install fglrx or sudo apt-cache search radeon| grep radeon sudo apt-get install i prefer the fglrx some like the radeon i say do what works or both then dont forget to update your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use the driver and make sure you are not using multiple drivers you can also search for xorg.conf that other people made for your card and those work well to if they have the same fonts and mouse/keyboard devices as you Goodluck Last edited by #!/mason/brain; 07-February-07 at 10:39 AM. |

| Apex Master Tech | just to be clear I am already running those games (all apart from HL1 without wine) just wondering if the ATI drivers can cope with them ![]() As for cadega it costs money, which is something I find hard to justify spending on software easpecialy on a monthly basis. As for instlaling ATI drivers looks to be the same as the nvidia drivers but slightly more problimatic, I sohuld have no problems |

No it actually doesn't, to buy support from Transgaming it costs money, but it's entirely free just to build it by yourself from the CVS repository. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Cedega

| Apex Tech Maniac | I think what you're thinking about, in terms of driver performance, is openGL support. ATI hasn't had the best openGL support, but, they're doing really well, lately, in coming back. The Nvidia drivers I think still have the best openGL support, which usually means slightly better driver performance, because there's obviously no native DirectX, in Linux. I've also heard that the ATI drivers for Linux, have been quite hard to get working, and the Nvidia ones are quite easie. but, again, that was a while ago. ATI drivers for Linux are supposed to work very well, now, so, you shouldn't really run into problems, and I'll knock on some wood, right now kay there are a lot of guides, about this, so, yeah Im sure you've found some I hope it goes well and you will tell us, how it goes, right?
