Default to upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question.

newegg has two gpu's that recently droped into my price range

ATI RADEON X800GTO 256mb gddr3 256 bitpath 125+5.46 for 3 day shipping
ATI RADEON X1600PRO 512mb gddr2 128 bitpath 135+5.46 for 3 day shipping

both cards are vista ready and use dx9 and open gl 2.0 also both quote from the seller info that they have 12 pixel pipelines but the buyers info on the x800 says it has 16 pixel pipelines stock unlocked

so even though the x1600 has double the mem I'm hessitant because it uses lower class memory and has a lower bitpath. Can gpu's be like classic cars for instance a 1976 corvette was faster better handeling and cheaper than its 1979 counterpart.

in closing which card has the overall better performance for my dollar?

Thanks to everyone here at pc apex.

Default Re: to upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question.

You cnat go rong with either of those cards. But i do have some knoledge of both cards. My freind owns the x1600 512mb while i own a x850 pro 256mb. His is pci-e and i have agp 8x. We have almost identical computer specs. Now you would think that the x1600 would get better frames/graphics in games. But my x850 acctually beats it by a fair amount. Wen running video stress test on source i get 127fps with everything maxed and resolution at 1680x1050. We hooked his computer up with same graphics and resolution and he got 98fps. I have smoother graphics but quility of graphics is about the same. Also ur looking at the x800gto and a x1600pro. Ther is big differnece wen looking in between pro and gto. Usually gto is a much faster card. If i wer u i would go with the x800gto you wont be sorry.

yup the x800gto is pretty good for the money although i caved and got oblivion and i do have to turn down the distance to halfway on the slider scale and the grass detail down to a quarter on the slider
but everything else is set at max at 1600x1200 and theres no laging or framerate stutters

thanks for the reccomendation
