Default Video Card Recommendation?

Hell everyone, Currently, i am looking for a mid-range AGP video card, prefferebly 256mb, that will be priced around $150-$250. An example would be the Nvidia 6600 GT. Could anyone give some recommendations?

256mb on a 6600GT isn't worth it. It doesn't have the power to run the high resolutions to benefit from 256mb.

128mb will be fine. BFG is a better buy as well.

If you're talking about these:

I would lean towards the BFG based on the clock speeds + lower price. It does have some negative reviews, but more positives than negatives. I don't see it as a "roll of the dice", as to whether whatever part you buy will be defective from the start, if you think about the statistics involved...

Good luck with your purchase, and let us know how it goes...

thank you guys for helping.

are the clock speeds more important than the memory? and what do the clock speed and memory actually do concerning performance?

At lower resolutions 128mb of faster clocked memory would beat 256mb at a slower clock rate.

If the game or benchmark program was using less than 128mb ram since it was only running 1024x768, then it will not need more than that, and it would run completely smooth, since all vram is, is a buffer for the image.

If you run higher resolutions, with 128mb ram, and the textures and image use up more than 128mb ram, it then becomes choppy.

The 128MB wouldn't be the limit at that point...the GPU would be.

This card is right at your limit, but damn it's so much better than a 6600: http://www.pricewatch.com/prc.aspx?i=37&a=262615

ATI Radeon X850 Pro 256MB AGP. I know the PCI Express versions can unlock to the XT, but i'm not sure the AGP ones will. It uses an R480 core, so it'll overclock REALLY high.

I'd definately get a Sapphire x800GT0 256MB AGP over any 6600. To boot, it's GPU has (4) more pipelines than 6600's (8), and an additional 4 that are usually unlocked very easily, as the core is most definately the same one used in x800XT (R423)-x850XT (R480/481) cards..

The clock frequency doesn't matter when the X800GTO has more pipelines, and processes a hell of a lot more data.

Not to mention, most of them (atleast most all R480+) you will find easily run at 500MHz+, some even having broke the 600MHz barrier and/ or being able to actually outclock real x850XT PE's.
