Default 6600GT power specs

Has anyone used any 6600GT in a Sony Vaio RX-860? I was considering going with an EVGA 6600 GT for my new video card but I was disappointed to learn that my Vaio RX-860 has a 270 Watt power supply. The 6600GT requires a minimum 350 Watt power supply and of course, Sony in their infinite wisdom, used a proprietary power supply which can not be upgraded without an extensive hackjob as far as I can tell from research. What are my options? Has anyone used this card succesfully on an RX-860? I hate to settle for a cheesy card but I don't want to get a midrange card if I will risk frequent system crashes or damage to the system and/or components. Thanks.

why not just buy a new PSU? Something a little beefier...in the 450W range...then you'd solve all your problems...

I wish I could. The stinking rx860 uses some power supply that is a non-standard size and from what I was able to find, it would take extensive cuting and bending of the case and PSU housing to get a standard size to fit properly. I would like to know if anyone else has this CPU and what they have done to get around it. I have heard that an externally powered card may be an option?

I talked to a buddy of mine who is running a 6600GT off of a 240W PSU and has not had any problems. I have also heard that these types of problems begin to occur after prolonged usage of the card in 3D mode. Since I am a casual gamer (I usually only play for a couple hours at a time), I am wondering if I could get away with the 6600GT?! Any one have any advice?

Odd thing is that on sites like Anandtech & Tomshardware I read lot's of reviews of SFF cases with
250w PSU's running fast videocards, here is an example;
http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=2495

The card they used is an X800 Pro and the Shuttles in this test have 240W PSU's...

It is a know fact, though, that the Shuttle PSU's were designed to take on full load for a long time...
Maybe the PSU in the Sony is designed well as the Shuttle PSU...

Speaking of PSU's made for SFF cases... wouldn't one of those fit? I know Shuttle sells this one;

It is 300W and tested to be quite good!

Thanks for the reply. Actually my friend who is running with a 240W PSU does have a SFF case. I wonder if that is why he doesn't have problems. I have read many reviews about people having problems with the 6600GT running on a Vaio RX860 but I guess there is a possibity that they are powering other peripherals and add-ons as well. If I get the 6600GT it will be my first upgrade to the stock PC (other than adding an additional 512MB DIMM). I wish I knew someone who has done it and hasn't had any problems.

Another problem is will a fullsized card actually fit? .I know many of the vios can only fit smaller sized cards.you need at least 4 1/2 inces from the mobo to the case for many cards.

Thanks...it seems as though the card would fit but I will be sure to confirm before I buy it!
