Default Difference Between DDR3 and GDDR3 *really need to know*

My XFX 7800 GT arrived today and it seems it has 256 MB of DDR3 memory instead of the 256 MB of GDDR3 memory Newegg said it had.

The card at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150108

XFX's info on the card:
http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product/...roductId=56410

My main concern is will I notice a decent performance hit because of the memory type? Or are they the same thing?

Basically if they are different, is it worth returning the card to Newegg and buying one with GDDR3 memory?
I'm anxious to know because I don't want to open my video card until I know whether I should return it or not.

Good question. As far as I've read, yes, GDDR ram is different from DDR ram. The main difference in GDDR type ram comes in how they are constructed and how they work. GDDR ram is a type of ram that you'll see on videocards, as it is a type of ram specifically designed for graphic cards, hence the "G" in GDDR.

HERE is an article that explains this in more detail.

Hope that helps,
Jobi

EDIT-
As far as performance, I wouldn't think that having GDDR3 ram over DDR3 will make that big a difference. But then again, I'm just making a conjecture and I'm probably wrong. I wouldn't return the card IMHO, that 7800 is going to kick some major arse whether it has GDDR3 or not!!

In the case of your video card, DDR3 and GDDR3 are the same thing. They just named them wrong.

Correct, its exaclty the same thing, just spelt/written a different way.

The "G" is only there to indicate that its graphics RAM.

Aye.. Though I get your point on how a handy site editor might've misspelled/ forgotten to put a G somewhere..The truth comes out: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/168

That's why I said "in the case of his card".
