Default Standard or Workstation card?

Alright. so i'm building a comp for my friend, and it will primarily be used for video editing with adobe premier. should i get a Radeon or gforce card, or should a go for a GireGL or Quadro FX card? (it will be a general use computer as well as the video editing) and what are some reccomendations for specific cards in the catagory you pick?

Ultra High End nVida Quadro would be some serious SLi FX 4500 cards, but I think they might be outa your friends price range.

Something like the FX3000 would be a nice choice for a general/workstation rig

yeah...the price range on this rig is about $3200, but thats for EVERYTHING...i forgot how much other stuff besides mobo/cpu/ram/graphics it takes to build a pc...
and, this pc will use 2 monitors, so sli isnt nessesary, is it? you can just plug one monitor into each card, right?

for video editing i dont think you need a workstation card since he wont be rendering cad stuff on the card. processing power and ram is the priority for video editing. along with alot of storage like a raid array. id say move funds to the most processing power and ram and maybe a scsi or fiber channel setup. if he's serious a preview video monitor would be good too.

yeah, thats what i thought...right now im lookin at two X850's (no crossfire needed with 2 displays...) he is not that pro, though. nothing like fibre-channel or the like. i am putting in two 74gb raptors in raid o, and he says that will be sufficient since he doesnt hang onto his stuff that long. btw..hey carbongraphite! you lucky b@51@12[)...you live in renton? i have to drive like half an hour to get to the mecca of nerds that is Fry's electronics...do you go there often? and i love your sig! Rhapsody kicks massive azz!!!
EDIT: hehe, it thought my 1337 was a mailto link....

You'll only need 1 graphics card (the X850 will power 2 monitors fine displaying a single desktop across both monitors - plenty of room for the preview window, bins, timeline etc)

Definately go for tons of RAM and a quick, hyperthreaded (or dual core) CPU though - that'll help heaps with premiere also, if you can get a largeish drive for storage I'd recommend it regardless (It's SO easy for data to pile up real quick these days )

$3200 budget. You can afford to build one simular to mine no problem. I've got $1800 in my new upgrade. AMD64 X2 4800, Abit Fatality AN8-SLI, XFX 7800GTX and 1GB PC3200 XMS Xpert. I only bought 1 7800GTX but you'd still have $1400 to spend on a case, drives & P/S. You could spend the xtra on a 2nd 7800GTX or a new Big Monitor. I picked up a new 21" Viewsonic Graphics Series G220fb from newegg about 6 months for $460 w/ shipping. The 7800 will support 2 monitors also.

great reccomendations guys. yeah, i think i'll go for one graphics card, but make it either an x850 PE or maybe a x1800. (giggidy giggidy giggidy!) I'm buying him my monitor setup, two 19" samsung syncmasters. they really look nice, both astheticly and picture-wise. i was already planning on the Athalon X2, so i'll be able to go up a few steps in the series...and maybe go for more hdd space (a large, slower bulk storage drive)

I've got a 19" Samsung at my office. It's has a real sweet picture. AutoCad (home design) at 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz and my eyes are never strained. I also picked up (2) 250GB Maxtor Maxline III SATA 16mb cache drives w/ 5 yr warranty for $105 apiece w/ shipping @ newegg for my HTPC project. I set them up in a Raid0 array. There smoking fast and quiet.

im glad someone recognized my rhapsody quote! when i play their songs for people they think it's some kind of joke. their music is good when i'm working on my chainmail (armor)

yeah...frys is totally addictive. the IT guy where my mom works had never been there, so i encourged him to go...he spent three hours there his first visit. (it can be a little overwhelming for a first timer.) i actually used them two months ago because their price actually (brace yourself) BEAT teh uber 1337 neweggs on 36 gig raptors. i know, i was shocked too. i got two 36 gig raptors for $140!! heck yes, rhapsody is amazing! their lyrics are a little cheezy (dragons, wizards, etc...) but i love the symphonic metal!
