Unhappy n00b 9800XT Problems

Well not really a n00b, but a n00b to the ATI graphics scene.

Just reformated, installed SP2, DX 9.0C, nForce 5.10 Mobo Drivers, Dot.Net 1.1, and Catalyst drivers, system seems to freeze up after i install the Catalyst drivers.

I have an A7n8-e board @ 2.5 ghz, 512 DDR @ 205 FSB.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong, it performs @ 5,000 in 3dmark 2001SE so there is a major problem!!! help!!!

Maybe try some different drivers?
I use the Omega drivers and haven't ever run into any issues with them.

Just make sure you uninstall the other drivers before installing new ones. Since you are already using ATI drivers you won't need to run Driver Cleaner although it wouldn't hurt.

Yeah a 9800 Pro should be over 15k easy!

Try PCPITSTOP.com and run the full tests, it might show something wrong..its has usefull diagnostic info.

well, i think it may have been the order of the way i was installing the drivers, but I am still having problems.

I am not sure if I need to install the Dot.Net 1.1 SP1 update as well? OR also install all the windows updates? I ran 3dmark last night and got a score of 11,000..but that still is WELL below...

This card is just really frustrating me. I will try the OMEGA drivers and let you know.

THanks

I think it may be an overheating issue. Has anyone heard of common problems with the 9800's overheating? I have got the drivers installed and working properly and everything (using DNA drivers), and it seems after a few minutes of UT2004 my system restarts, system crahsed with 3dmark 2001 and 2003, but..strangely enough, no crashes with Doom3???

Try turning down your overclock on your CPU a bit to help with the case temps, and stability. If that doesnt work I have a few other things to check out. What is your PSU rated at. I know that my 9800 Pro takes a seperate molex connection for power. If your PSU cant handle the card and the overclock it will crash. Also try updating your motherboard bios. I had a older socket A board that would crash whenever running AGP x8 after a bios update it ran fine. Another thing you can try if none of that works turn the AGP to 4X instead of 8X. There will be a decrease in performance but more than likely it will help with stability.

O god the 9800's overheated all the time. The 9800 XT has that nice copper spread to help but in the end it still gets hot. If you have a card and think you are having some head issues I suggest that you look into geting a Zalam 700 cooler.

BTW, if you think you might be having heat issues... One good way to tell is artifacts in anything that would make the card heat up like a game. An artifact can be something like a black tear or a white line that just is out of place and is easy describable as something not supposed to be there.
Another thing to possible look for is when the card crashes out of games or when unexplanable you get a driver error and it restartes to its default.

Hope that helps a little. I know I had heat isses...that is to say that I had to use extra hardware and fans to keep it cool. Trying to keep that card in a closed case with little air flow won't work well at all.

I have an ANTEC TRUE POWER 420W... And yes I have my XP-M 2500+ Clocked down to 2.2ghz, from 2.5ghz. I have extensive airflow thru out the case as well. But ya it seems as soon as I run any graphic intense applications, the video card is HOT to the touch.

Well since I already have extensive watercooling I guess I might as well get a GPU block to cool this bad boy. I hope in the end its not a PSU issue! ha
