| Apex Advanced Techie | Hey guys, I have a 9200 that i figured out has a dead fan. i've been running it but not running any games until i can afford a new vid card. I tried running bf2 but my computer would restart because, i'm guessing, my vid card would overheat. is it ok to run this with a dead fan until prolly december? my romm is relatively cold and i have adequate cooling.. (2 120mm, 1 90mm) Thanks, Jrod

| Sir Knight of Spamalot | Strap a spare 60mm or 80mm fan on it.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Running a video card without a fan is just plain nutz! Unless your rich and got the cash to go out and buy a new card. Eventually its going to cook itself to death regardless of what your doing on your pc. I wouldnt use your pc until you get a fan on it. Otherwise you'll be toasting marshmellows on it before you know it. See what you can do for some extra cash to fix it before it fixes you. That's just my two cents..... Good luck!!!!! |

| Apex Tech Fanatic | I have both a 9200 and 9250 lightly OCed and they have no fans on them. Pretty smooth with UT2K4 considering how old they are. The 9200 I have was made by ATI (so the packaging said) and repackaged by CompUSA. It has been picky about which mobo it is attached to, and you must also be careful about installing older games, they tend to FUBAR your Direct X if you have a newer game installed first. The 9250 is a Sapphire, and I also got one for a friend. They don't like it when I hit 195+ on the FSB, but other than that they have been superb. Also, I picked them up at the 'egg for $38 a piece; I really can't complain considering the price and they do everything I ask them to. EDIT- they came with no fans. Go check out all of the 9200 series cards at Newegg if you don't believe me. |

there is a diffrence though.... video cards with no fans have bigger heat sinks, and dont have as high clock rates as simular cards with fans....

| Apex Tech Fanatic | I meant to write that about the heatsinks. Obviously from a quick look at a fan version compared to a fanless one, any reasonable person should be able to draw that conclusion. As for the clock speed, that may be true with cards slightly newer than the 9200- 9250 series, but I have yet to find any that have a higher clock rate than the ones I own of the same series. Use the tremal adhesive of your choice and slap on a decent sink (perhaps an old NB sink, some of them seem to be similar in size/shape as the ones on these cards). Use good judgement. I have one card that I modded by using the heatsink off of my PIII 550. It was entirely too small for the CPU it came with, but with a little airflow in the case, it works wonders for the Voodoo 3 it resides on (of course occupying the next available PCI slot). I personally hate those cheesey little fans like the few I have seen on cards of the same series. With a bigger heatsink and cool air blowing on it, I personally believe my cards are better off than if they had the factory installed hsf combo and restricted amounts of available fresh air. Then again this is the internet, and someone is always going to argue with you over every little thing, so I bid you all a good day! |

I second that notion, if you're not happy with epoxying a spare fan on, just use zip ties to hold it on until you get a proper replacement.

Wow that is a good idea. I have done this on a older card until i was able to find the proper fan.
