Default Best girlfriend ever!

Ok so that was a tricky title, but it's what i'm trying to be.
I'm going to be buying my man a new Vid Card and want an opinion on what's best. He's a self proclaimed GeForce man, but if it's a gift I'm sure he'll go ATI.
Right now i'm looking at the ATI 9800 and a GeForce FX.
So the questions are, if he's running 1200 AMD with 512 DDR 233 and is a big time gamer, which card will be better and more manly, and which brands rock?

An ATI branded 9800 will keep him around for a while.

Ok first off i wish i had a girlfriend like you, but the 9800(if you can find it) is the hottest **** on the market., but it will run you 400$. The 9700 pro is easier to find but badass too. I would suggest not to get him an fx if you ever want to sleep i nthe same room as the comp. The built in fan sounds like a vaccuum cleaner.

I think the Sapphire Radeon cards offer the best price / performance ratio. The 9700 pro or 9800 pro is what I would buy.

Right now i'm just looking at the best and seeing where to go from there. He's not into editing, that's my department, and it's all mac baby, so the AIW cards are a bit overkill since his TV is so old it doesn't have a remote and he doesnt watch much anyway, just games... and games... and games... wish i got that much attention.

Well in that case, i would say the 9700-9800 pro series, I like Sapphire as well , they make pretty decent cards

The FX is a good performing card in its own right, it's just not up to par with the hype that surrounded it, the "9700 Killer", sure it's roughly even, but it didn't kill it... add to that how noisy they are, and you see why no one particularly likes them..

If you want one of the best 9800 cards and can wait till the end of the month go for the Hercules 9800pro. Their 9700pro was awsome and im sure the 9800pro will be just as good. And for kickers it has a blue led fan...hehehe!

No i dont hink that the 256 model is out yet. If it were im sure we would have seen it on a PR review since it is the first mainstream gaming card to have 256mb.

OK so it seems like i'll be going with the 9800. Since it's not a timely issue would it be worth it to wait the month out for the new 256ers? Also when is the release date on those? One last question, how much better is the 9800 than the 9700?

Yes it is worth waiting a month if you have the month. I have no idea when the release date is, and the 9800 is considerably better than the 9700 since it has smart shader 2.1 and smooth vision 2.1 not 2.0.

Paige, that's a very nice thing to do ... but gifts of fancy hardware do not a relationship make.

The ability to suck a golfball through a hose is _way_ more important, IMO
