Default Radeon 9800 Pro PMS?

My friend has an ATi 9800 Pro, and about once a month it gets to where it just FREAKS OUT and won't work or cooperate with him. Like the graphics become real weird, like you can see the pixels and the color becomes all distorted. It happened once while I was hanging out with him... and like in counter-strike if you run at the wall, it looks like moss or somthing is growing up the wall or somthing. At 1st we were convinced it was an overheating problem... but we would turn off the computer and take off the side panel and direct a huge fan to blow air into it for a couple of hours, but the graphics would still be messed up. The thing with this problem is that its gone in like a day or two, but it happens about once a month... Any ideas?

(Id like to apologize to any ladies viewing this post, but me and my friend felt that this problem is best described as GPU PMS due to its monthly return)

I have to ask a couple of things.........

1. Is this system overclocked at all.......either CPU or the video card?

2. What are you using for the HSF on the card.......is it stock or aftermarket? and does the fan run?

Nothing SHOULD be overclocked, I told him not to mess with that stuff...the only way it would be overclocked is if the mobo bios settings came default OC'd. He uses the stock heatsink on his GPU.

Like he games alot, prolly more than he sleeps... is the stock cooler fine for his computer being on that long?

Okay.............sounds like your not sure about the oc'ing part..........

Well, I'd recomend pulling the HSF off the card, cleaning it real good with alcohol (both HSF & GPU), use Artic Silver 5, apply just a thin coat and reinstall the HSF. Make sure the fan is running on HSF.

You could download the latest Omega drivers (uninstall the old ones first) to see if that helps..........

Well im not 100% sure he hasnt OC'd it, unless he went and did it behind my back! Ill check whenever i go to his house again. I really dont think its a heating problem, his card will be ice cold and it still does that. Also, i swear whenver i go over there some one is playing World of Warcraft on that computer. My friends little brother is so desperate to play it, that he plays it whenever my friend goes to sleep. That computer prolly runs WoW 20+ hours sometimes. Could this constant video stress cause his GPU to wig out? Also could this be fixed with a better GPU heatsink?

First, check and make sure that the moldex connector is connected to the card........Then, make sure his fan on the card is woking.......Then go into the BIOS and make sure the grapics is set to the AGP slot.......Then I would try uninstalling the old drivers and install the Omega drivers........If that don't fix it, then get yourself an Artic Cooler (that's what I'm using).

I agree! I've got an 9800Pro myself... and I use one of these Artic Cooling coolers (newer version) as well...
atm... it runs at 400mhz core & 360mhz mem & no artifacts at all! I might be able to push it higher but
I'm feeling this speed is the right "compromise" for my rig...

What kind of PSU does he have? Could be that it acts up if it's under full load for a certain time...

Yeah, the PSU could be the culprit......he should have at least a 420w...........no less
