| Apex Techie Lite | I jus bought my 9700 pro the other day and i wanna overclock it now . I was wonderin what kind of cooler i should use. I was thinking about pickin up a Zalman ZM80A-HP and screw a thin 60mm fan on both sides of the cooloer. would this be efficient or would it ruin the flow of heat or something? I also have a 80mm side intake to cool it also.

| Apex Tech Fanatic | The zalman coolers do not lower the temperature. In fact, they get hotter than the stock. They were just made so that people can enjoy silent PCs without having to hear the sound. I think the stock heatsink and fan do a great job. I just like the way hercules put the double heatsinks on both sides of the card. Check out the Hercules 9700 pro. |

| Apex Techie Lite | well after looking at reviews and temps it cooled it about 1 degree more then the stock becuse of the extra surface area and if i make it active by adding the two 60mm fans on both sides should make it more efficent....shouldent it?

I guess it would make it cooler but you would be waisting away a single PCI slot if you install the fan on top of the heatsink. The heatsink is quite big. If i was in your position, I would install a new heatsink on the reverse side of the card like hercules did and install seperate memory heat spreaders or make your own from old p1 heatsinks. Otherwise, without caring about loosing a single PCI slot, try it. | |||||||||||||||||||

| Aqua Pimp | I thought about something like that. But with the fan mounted above the card blowing straight up. Maybe something like Highspeed PC's AGP airlift. here Or a cheap hard drive cooler would work too. That would keep a heat differential so the heatpipe would be more efficient. I'm not sure it would work near as well as a 10 dollar crytal orb though. And for the kind of money I'd spend on a Zalman and an additional fan, I can add a gpu waterblock to my set-up. Personally, I'm less than impressed with the stock cooling on the 9700. Modern cards run too hot for a cheesy thermal pad and a noticeable gap between chip and cooler. Can't be good in the long term. |
