Default fitting VGA Silencer but now fan plug wont fit!!! HELP.

Im finally fitting a VGA Silencer rev3 to my Asus 9600XT/TVD video card, and have successfully removed the old HSF and layed the Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU.

But now the next step is to plug in the VGA Silencer fan controller into the VGA card, but the Asus 9600XT/TVD uses a 3pin plug and the VGA Silencer uses a 2pin plug!

now im stuck!

Any suggestions???

Thanks!

Simple.. use a 4pin molex to 3pin fan adapter(or whatever the hell it's called).

Wait, the VGA silencer uses a 2pin? I must have misread...

It didn't come with any adapters to run it off of a molex?

Unless someone else has a better solution... you could get one of these and cut the 3 pin part off, then cut the 2 pin plug, and solder it, then put some heatshrink tubing on. It would still look professional.

compare the wiring of the old fan plug with the wiring on the new plug. If the positive and negative leads match then you may be able to use the connecter anyway and one pin just wont be connected.

You can do that or replace the 2 pin header with the three pin header from your refrence cooler, either way should work as long as the wires are in the correct order.

the problem lies with Asus using their own 3pin plugs, unlike the regular 3pin plugs.
the 3rd wire is for fan rpm monitoring, which is a nice feature on the Asus 9600XT but the other benefit of this card is that you can control the fan speed according to temps with the Asus software.

Going to take a shot in the dark here, that Asus plug look kinda like the CD/DVD-ROM audio cable plug on your soundcard?

Since the Silencer only has two wires and the card has the fan controller third, I'd say cut the plug off the old HSF (remove the monitoring wire completely), cut the plug off the Silencer, and solder the old HSF plug onto the Silencer power wires. If you have it running at full speed, no, you won't be able to adjust the speed up or down, but to my mind, why would you need to? The change in noise levels should be almost undetectable, IMO...

Talking

Have a close look at the 3 pin plug that the Asus 9600XT/TVD uses. its only about 4mm wide and looks a tad different to the regular 3pin fan header!

The search is still on!

Here is a photo that i took!
shows the VGA silencer standard 2 pin female plug on the left, and the Asus VGA fan non-standard 3 pin female plug on the right, and you can see the Asus VGA card 3 pin male located on the Asus VGA card.

Ideally, i'd like to find out what type of plug Asus use (and what its called) so i can get another Asus 3 pin female plug and wire it to the standard Male 2 pin fan header, so that the VGA Silencer can plug straight into that. (This way there is no cut wires at all.)

If you can get to the solder pads on the fans then just unsolder the cables and swap them. If not then just cut and swap, throw on a little shrinkwrap and it will even look good.
